Review: Minami Kotori (Figure-rise LABO)Review: Minami Kotori (Figure-rise LABO)Review

Good morning everyone!

Hope you have been having a happy weekend. I'm almost 4 weeks in lockdown and have been trying to figure out what to do to stay sane. I've been playing Animal Crossing, doing my online school, and work. However, my days are getting a little wonky and starting to bleed together. My packages get into quarantine and my dad gives them to me when he feels like they're safe ... and I was so happy that he finally gave me my Hobby Link Japan package! This meant that I had some hobby stuff to do that would allow me to take my mind off of things and also unplug. My screen time has gone up a lot, so I've been happy to unwind this weekend and get into my hobby supplies.

BACKSTORY

Kotori is a really cute character from Love Live, which I both actually enjoyed watching and I do actually listen to Muse's music (with my dad lol!). I had really wanted a scale of her, but to be honest couldn't find one that I loved ... until I set my eyes on ITEM #891755. I was intrigued that it was a model kit which required no painting or glue, and I was pretty sold as soon as I saw the pictures CITRINYA had uploaded (lol, I saw them right as she uploaded them too! Kismet). So, I pushed the button and here we are... Let's dive right in.

BOX / INSTRUCTIONS

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414739.jpeg

Kotori's box is pretty large. I always pay for cheapest shipping possible from HLJ, and they actually had to upgrade me (for free! amazing customer service) because her box was so large. Check out the cut below for some more info on her box, which I actually really like.

So this box is kind of the perfect box in my opinion. Not only does it feature tons of product shots, but on the back it actually features some original art as well!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414741.jpeg

My favorite part of the box might be the side, however, because it shows a little bit about how they made the figure and some key pieces of it.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414746.jpeg

The instructions are very long. I will not bother going into much detail on them, but one side is in color and the other side is just in ... pink. Would have been nice if both sides were in color because that is helpful for me when putting together a figure. But, colored instructions are not typical I believe.

ASSEMBLY

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414748.jpeg

My mom said Kotori looked like a squid from behind. Yes, they did a great job on her hair -- more on that later!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414751.jpeg

The skirt has some beautiful opalescent qualities. Be careful when separating these pieces, I think I broke the skirt a little on the middle part (but not noticeable). These pieces were some of the harder ones to separate. I really love the lace detailing on the bottom of the skirt.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414749.jpeg

And, of course I broke something! It's not a Gala hobby day without a few errors. The balloons are really delicate, I had placed them together but forgot to attach the string first ... soooo, yeah. And I had just gotten done reading the warning!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414750.jpeg

"Oh, yeah, be careful..."
*snaps piece*

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414752.jpeg

I ended up gluing the balloons but probably didn't have to, because they slide in to her hair and hand. Better safe than sorry. My dad had model glue which kind of took on the color of the pink balloon, and it's barely noticeable.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414753.jpeg

I found her base pretty boring (just a white disk), so I decided to bling it up a bit. I used to have a rhinestone phone case (or four lol) and the creator was nice enough to send over replacements. I have had these in my drawer forever, so I said "why not!" and began to separate the colors I thought would go nice on her base.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414754.jpeg

Once that was done, let the rhinestone adventure begin!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414756.jpeg

I think it turned out pretty well. Wish I had had some more to do the sides of her base but oh well, it just adds a little more "glam" which I love.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414755.jpeg

And here she is! All finished! Wait...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414757.jpeg

Yup, I noticed that I had forgotten to put on her garter strap, so I did that today when I woke up lol. Thankfully she was easy to disassemble.

FIGURE

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414759.jpeg

Now that she's all done, we can see Kotori in her full glory! She's a super cute figure. My mom said she even looks as good as some of the scales I have, and I have to agree. Honestly, she looks great on my shelf. I would definitely buy other Figure-rise LABO kits if they all had this quality. Check out under the cut for a 360!

Going in on some details...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414763.jpeg

I really love how Kotori's hand is gently holding the balloon in place. Her fingers are articulated really well in my opinion.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414765.jpeg

The base, modded by me, is super cute and fun. I have to say -- the sticker work on this figure was near difficult. I am really good at placing stickers, but I wanted to rip my hair out at some points when I saw how I had to do her laces on her one foot (and it's kind of hidden!). I think I did a really good job, but I understand why Citrinya decided to paint hers instead of use the stickers.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414766.jpeg

I wish I had been a little cleaner with my edges when separating the pieces. I think I was just eager to finish things, but I might go in later and clean some stuff up.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414768.jpeg

Kotori's really cute, I think they nailed her expression. I also just find that her body is really well done. And, yes, she has underwear. I don't know if I forgot to upload it or it didn't upload, but YES it is incredibly detailed.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414769.jpeg

I think this figure does her hair AMAZING. It's such a difficult sculpt to pull off and somehow I feel like this model kit might have rocked it better than anyone has. If anyone is wondering, the key to getting the stickers for her hair ties to stick is to make sure that they are attached to each other, so one end fully loops. If you don't loop it properly, they will peel up.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414770.jpeg

Kotori's skirt is very beautiful, I love the affect it gives. I have some issues with the ribbon on the back of her skirt just not fitting together all the way, but c'est la vie!

COMPARISONS

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414771.jpeg

Kotori looks really nice next to ITEM #774937. Both figures have that beautiful skirt and the teal coloring.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414772.jpeg

If Miku wasn't looking down and required being placed on a top shelf, I would definitely put these two together. I want Kotori to be placed on an upper/middle shelf so I can see her sparkly base.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414773.jpeg

ITEM #361549 and Kotori are basically sized exactly the same (Eli is a 1/7 figure), and they look great next to each other on my shelf! Can't wait to get some of the other Love Live girls up there.

And, uh, lastly...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/03/29/2414758.jpeg

Yes, a bottle of Cholula. I was eating breakfast and noticed that Kotori and the Cholula bottle were the same size. I wonder if Kotori likes hot sauce ... and if she does, what team is she?

FINAL THOUGHTS

This figure was incredibly easy to put together. Yes, I had some mishaps, but it wasn't the figure's fault. Honestly, it's kind of fool proof. The figure is designed in a way that it only fits together if you do it right, and it comes apart typically easily (minus the balloon) if you forget to put a piece on like I did.

I kind of wish that she didn't have the cream detailing on her skirt. I am not such a huge fan of that off white color, and I feel like white would have just matched better. Last night, as I was falling asleep, I was dreaming of a "chocolate" version of this figure. Yummy yummy, now I'm hungry!

Sculpting (did the pieces all fit together without me crying?): 9/10
Painting (do I like the color choices that they picked?): 8/10 -- I think that they did a really good job with her skintone and her face especially, but I just don't particularly care for the cream on her skirt. I also don't particularly care for the stickers in her hair and feel like they could have just been omitted.
Posing (does she look beautiful?): 10/10
Base (does the base hold her up?): 7/10 -- it's very sturdy but I'm taking points off for it being so boring. But I guess it's a model kit and you can do whatever with it.
Packaging: 10/10 -- original art, product shots, and a box that was exactly the size it needed to be for the figure!

All in all, if you are a fan of Love Live, Kotori, cute girls, or model kits -- I would recommend this. Wether you are new to the hobby or not, she's a fun figure to build!

With the decals I mostly had issues with the ones around her hair. The next morning when I went to go fix her garter belt, two of them had kinda just flipped up, but I made sure I affixed them to the ends of each other and they've held now. If you just attach them straight to her hair and don't connect the ends they won't stay well.
And I love her -- again, thank you for your initial pics and review, they were what made me push the button!

Lol, of course- I was looking forward to it!

I didn’t look at the decals too closely if I’m being honest (I pretty much took a glance and said LOL no way), but they’re water decals iirc, meaning you should be good to go if they’re stuck to each other!

Glad you’re enjoying her as much as I am mine!

You said you had some issues with the decals, but they honestly look great to me! Now you can see why I opted for painting instead of those though, lol.

I also love what you did with her base! I feel like it’s just simple enough to keep the focus on Kotori while still adding some interest on the otherwise plain disk(s). The texture from the rhinestones is a huge bonus to a figure like this, I think.

Overall a great read! I hope you’re enjoying your Kotori as much as I’m enjoying mine!

dtindcarea3 месяца назад#77043122I'm seriously considering building a GK, however, but it would be of a character where prepainted scales don't exist.

I think the biggest difference between this and a legitimate GK is that you don't have to pin, sand, paint, etc this kit. It comes completely painted and literally is just plastic you fit together. So much closer to a gundam or a model kit than an actual GK. I actually want to do a GK as well, but I'm trying to just figure out even how to buy one haha.

LittlePisces3 месяца назад#77043128I'm a girly girl who just wants more cute girl kits! I wouldn't mind buying her if I knew the source.

Given we're all stuck in quarantine, you should check out Love Live! I really like the original Muse girls and the music lol. And thanks for the compliment on my nails :) I had to end up cutting them short and they're a little grown out, but I can't wait to get them done when we're released.

Few of the model kits that caught my attention. I'm a girly girl who just wants more cute girl kits! I wouldn't mind buying her if I knew the source. Your customization of the base sounds fun and spices up the figure even more.

As girly as I am, I want to chime in and say your nails are cute! Perfect for spring. ✿

Great job on putting her together and the review! It almost inspires me to try to build her since I really like the pose and the balloons. I had seen this figure browsing various sites a while back and thought it was super cute but when I saw it was a GK I passed on it. I'm seriously considering building a GK, however, but it would be of a character where prepainted scales don't exist.

Chibi-Jibs3 месяца назад#77042804One of my favorite things about reading your articles is hearing how involved your parents are with everything.

Kotori definitely isn't my favorite Love Live girl, but the kit was too cute to pass up. And, yes, haha, they are very involved -- moreso now that we're in quarantine.

Melon_pan43 месяца назад#77042810Ohh she's a garage kit? I suck at building stuff so I would probably ruin it if I got it. She does look really detailed though especially the balloons, almost like you can pop them!

So she's more of a model kit, basically in the style of like a gundam. She comes pre-painted and there's no gluing required. You just follow the instructions and fit the pieces together. She is super duper easy to put together. Some kits I've done in the past have the possibility to put items in wrong, but items only fit for this kit if they're in right. If you're interested in trying some hobby stuff, this kit is a great place to start.

LemonMIntCat3 месяца назад#77042811She turned out beautifully, gala! Love the rhinestones on the base! If you like Miku at all (not sure) her kit from this line is very nice and easy to build. I hope they continue with figures in this line!

That kit is pretty cool! I don't know if I'd pick it up, but looking at it it definitely has a way cooler base than Kotori, and the other Labo figure (ITEM #690842) does too! Wonder why they skimped out on the base.
