    Hmmmm. Strange.
On that note, it might take me a little while to respond to your second response. I'm a little slow when it comes to putting down everything.

It indeed takes more time to write down a response. I do enjoy it.

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016Pretty much, can't really add much more, since you've said it.
One thing though, I'd like to see more pictures of the profile of the doll. It's really hard to sometimes discern how big/pouty the lips are, or how long a nose is.

The angle used for the photo's is an important key to this. Some important details can only be showed when the head isn't photographed from the side or front. When a photo is taken from the a point that is more focused on the side those details can be shown. I do see the problem that company's face with an angle like that. In combination with the eyes and the point where the doll is looking to, some angles are more difficult to work from. It reminds me about a blog from Orchiddolls. Sadly i couldn't find his name here on MFC, but his blog stil exists orchiddolls.com... . He does amazing jobs on creating photo's and bringing out the character so well.

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016It was through the blank heads that I noticed that Min Yan, and Wu MinYan were two different headsculpts, since I spent ages trying to figure out, comparing their fullset photos, why the Prince, and Emperor faces looked so different even though it's the same character. I kinda assumed the clothing was the only difference at first. I know, stupid, but my initial confusion came from "Why do they look so different, even though their names, and face-up are similar?" So yeah... blank faces, very helpful.
He has a very gentle face, and, what a friend said, he looks a little feminine? Androgynous? Which I can see, it isn't a problem, I just found it funny, since I didn't notice until he mentioned it. In his opinion ZhuZhao was the opposite to Min Yan, aka very masculine.
Yeah, some default face-ups would probably not look as good if the skin tone is different, so I wonder how they deal with that. Then again, I've also noticed that some official face-ups look pretty... not great.

I can see some similarities between both face-ups. What i think is pretty amazing is that Min Yan looks younger than ZhuZhao. Using the same head sculpt Loongsoul did an amazing job about their face-ups. It feels like both face-ups are not created by the same person. Not recognizing the face sculpt is a big compliment for the person who did the face-up. (Laila with her Infinity face-up has a sculpt that is also used for Courage and Liberty. Same sculpt, total different characters.)
I can see why he looks a bit feminine but his face sculpt is definitely male. Sometimes a good look is necassary to see if a certain doll is male or female. It is helpful that some shops adding the gender in the discription or are refering to the doll as he or she. With some sculpts it is really hard to see if the doll is male or female. In case of ZhuZhao and Min Yan i don't think they are really feminine or androgynous. Maybe it is because of the traditional clothing and the hairstyle that is used in some male warrior characters.

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016Yup. Wigs can change the entire face-shape, and I feel also has a big impact on the face-up. With BJD's, it's the complete package that counts, and then there are all these options for wigs. And even just adjusting the wig into a certain position can change the feel of the character.
I actually, specifically bc of that, bought ZhuZhao's basic wig, bc I wanted that widows-peak for him. (I dearly hope that the wig actually has it.)
Hmhm. I don't have a problem with flat chests, if the rest of the doll looks mature enough, pear-shaped body for example, but on a very thin/small body... yeah no thanks. I don't really like child dolls, as in: I wouldn't get one, bc I just prefer mature/adult characters. So I get what you mean kinda.
Immature looking bodies just don't really go into my interest scheme, but I can go for different features, as long as the end-result looks mature.

I fully agree. If there is one small thing not in place it will break the total image of the doll. Or in some cases even the character. The way the wig is placed has a lot of influence on the character. With Serphien i liked how the wig was placed on the official photo's. But figured out later that she looks better when placing the wig a little bit more foreward and adding more hair in front of her ears (The curls in her wig are difficult to handle). I do like ZhuZhao's basic wig. So far my experiences with wigs are that they are styled to match with the promotional pictures. I do hope Loongsoul does that too.
You exactly pointed out the problem with flat chests: It can make the doll looks immature. I am not a fan of childlike dolls either. I prefer more mature looking body's or in case with Serphien the horror influences which breaks the realisme in a good way. A small chest can be nice if the body itself doesn't look to immature. The example with a pearshaped body you gave is a good one.

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016Hmhm. I think it's just one of the weird beauty standards for male bodies. Like, I do enjoy some muscle, and bulk, but when the body looks a little to "sculpted" (no pun intended) it tends to look weird.
I think one problem I do have with BJD bodies, is that some times their hands seem too big/their arms are too long, and their feet are too short. It's a little weird when the shoes the dolls wear look stumpy bc, based on more realistic anatomy, they're maybe 2-3 cm too short. But that's just me being nitpicky, and in the end, I can deal with it, since it doesn't ruin the doll for me.
Hmm, well the big-eyed look probably will never "die" or anything, since it's such a popular style.
Isebel, is it that lil re streak only on her bottom lip? I thought it was supposed to look like it had been bitten... (I don't like that style tbh.) But I get what you mean.
I've seen some private-sculptor BJD's, aka not a company, who make chubbier dolls. They always seem pretty popular, though I guess it's a mix between demand, and there always seeming to only be a limited quantity available.

I get what you mean. Some muscular bodies are a bit overdone. When the sculpt exceeds realism it got actually less realistic. I do like to see some muscles but indeed not in an overdone way. No idea how to call it but the Hercules shaped body types are not really my cup of tea. With feet i indeed notice sometimes that the feet are looking too big or small. Especially with some kind of footwear that accentuates exactly that.
With hands this is also true. Some of the hands looking big. The detailing on the hands itself has a big influence too. If there isn't many details in the hands, hands can look easily out of place. Hands can have a big influence if the lines aren't in place with the age of the doll or with the age that the face represents. A good thing is that hands and feet can be changed (with stringed dolls this is somewhat more difficult). I think there is more demand for chubbier dolls than a lot of manufacturers have noticed. It is possible that this will be picked up by some company's. Dolls are changing through time and i think this will be an aspect added somewhere in the future.
The big eye look can work greatly but not on every doll style. It is a popular style and i also think that style won't dissapear. I do love the big eye style if it is used correctly. Not every sculpt is able to wear big eyes succesfully. Especially with male dolls i like smaller eyes. Big eyes breaks somehow the character of the male doll.
Isabels lower lip is indeed the point i didn't like. It is a coloration that feels somehow out of place. I would prefer it if it was not so visible added. If it is a bite mark that DollChateau intended to create i don't know. It looks painfully swollen.

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016Troublesome. I think the big problems arrive when you see a sculpt you like, but you don't know the name of the sculpt, or the company which made it. Sure, if it's the official promo-photos, there'll be logos, but in the cases where they've been cropt away, or the photos came from a private person, or, which can happen, the person simply doesn't know the name of the company, even with the logo.
I remember looking at pinterest for robe ideas, and since I was looking at BJD's, there were also some random dolls added in, and I couldn't for the life of me, tell where they came from. Well, besides more obvious ones like DC.
Bonus: Several pics were of discontinued dolls, and as I've noticed, it's really hard to actually find pics of discontinued dolls on most sites. Maybe that's just bc I'm bad at finding stuff, but I'm still saying that it's too difficult.
That's honestly pretty sucky. :( And you just described exactly what I thought happens with this type of ordering process. I mean, with some BJD sites, you have the ease of ordering, and even might get extra help by getting layaway options. Meanwhile DD doesn't want ya to get dolls.

I agree. I have seen several sculpts of beautiful dolls where i could not find the company or anything related to the sculpt making it frustrating. Also some incredible dolls are made by a private person what also makes it a bit dissapointing because that means there is only one. No idea how i would call it otherwise. There are a lot of people who are doing an amazing job at making custom dolls and custom face-ups and bodyblush. It is actually the biggest and weirdest compliment i can give to someone when i am dissapointed that only one is made. The creative part of the BJD hobby is awesome but sometimes it hurts to see that only one exists.
Volks has a way of selling that i don't understand. As a company i think that you want to sell a certain amount of your products and building a good reputation around it. Making it hard to buy is not logical and i can't understand what their idea behind it is. I do like the dollfie's that Volks make and i hope that they change their way of selling over time. What makes it more weird is that their USA site is more userfriendly but does not ship oversea. I am keeping an eye on them hoping that their way of buying improves.

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016I think I should note that I've been considering just using a fantasy version of Asia for the story, just to make is easier to create the world the way I want it to. Same goes for different parts of Europe, and so on.
    1) I gave him Godhood bc the doll said that he's the Sun God ZhuZhao... I will not apologise for my lack of creative answer... Sorry.

No need to apologise. The best answer is a straight one. The confidence you put in your answer is also a good reason. :D

Iskana4 месяца назад#754780162) Not sure yet, I've looked at some healing plants, but I feel like it'd be ... weird? to try and take a known healing plant, and change it to fit him. So maybe I'll just "create" a plant for the story, and leave it at that.Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер I've been thinking of basing it on stuff like Ginseng and Ginger, since those two seem popular as healing plants. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер So a thick-root plant, and some blade-shaped leaves, and not sure if it should have small flowers or berries as well. :P
The plant is kinda supposed to be a "symbol" or result of his regret at being purely a God of war, basically blaming himself for not not being able to actually do anything to help people, besides trying to make their deaths have a point. At least in the eyes of the people fighting, while he himself considers every life wasted a personal burden. He's basically guilt ridden, it being very traumatic to see so many people die, and only ever recieving prayers from people who were close to dying. While other Martial God's also had followings for other things, and not just battle and death, he was only ever really seen as a God for the death in battle.
Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI'm not sure if I would include this idea, but I've also been playing with the idea of all these prayers pertaining war, and death, causing him to accumulate resentful energy, which caused him to go berserk, causing him to attack and subsequently killing (mortal) people in his rage. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерImagine Kali from Hinduism, who went crazy for bloodshed when she killed the demon, by drinking his blood. But like I said, I'm not sure about this, bc I wonder if it'd be too edgy, or something.
So when he gave up his life/Godhood, part of his spirit, just like with the sword, nourished a plant, and basically manifesting his wish to help, and saves life, instead of just letting them die, in the form of this plant.

Ginger and Ginseng are both interesting plants. I like your idea to put some of the characteristics of ZhuZhao into the design of the plant. The idea of using a healing type of plant with leaves that are blade-shaped in combination with a thick root has an interesting contradiction. It can show power (blades, war) in combination with kindness (healing aspect) which is a very nice idea. The burden he bears can be showed through the plant. It is a strong and sad story and i can understand why he want to give up his life/Godhood. The idea of ZhuZhao going berserk can work. The only way to find out is to think about this idea and some detailing behind it. His story with and without that part is strong.

Iskana4 месяца назад#754780162.5) In this life he's a cultivator who's path depends a lot on healing, so that's his first real "connection" with it. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер Zhou HuanZhao was born with a strong affinity for cultivation, and started training almost too early, at 6 Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI think most common is 10yo in Novels? I only saw it mentioned once or twice, and both times the characters were around 10-12. So he spends 4 years building up a base, and around 10 years old he officially joins a sect, and his desire for healing manifests itself. While the wish was for him to become a strong martial cultivator, he is allowed to prusue healing as long as he keeps up with the martial aspect.
He's never experienced a real Qi-deviation, which at first was pushed as his naturally strong spiritual power, actually has to do with the balancing properties of the plant which of course reacts, and connects to his spiritual powers. Kinda like a crutch, or one of those plant-support poles, to prevent big plants from breaking while growing.

This makes his backstory with the Sword and Plant a lot stronger. The plant as a symbol for his desire, his wish and his goals and the sword for what he has to do. The idea of joining a sect is nice one. It shows the strong will you are creating for ZhuZhao.

Iskana4 месяца назад#754780163) Min Yan, or "Yun YanFeng, as I'm still calling him) is a ... former? Prince (Bc Min Yan is "Prince Min Yan"), I guess his title becomes Lord, if he's not in the line of succession? Idk. He wasn't a very important son, aka "not favoured"/was just another one of many children from concubines.
He was, though, one of the few who were allowed to cultivate, though he still gained little favour, bc he wasn't exceptionally talented, only good enough to justify him being permitted to cultivate.
The idea is also that he's automatically removed from ever being able to be considered for official-Royal positions in the court, when becoming a cultivator, since cultivators from the royal line are barred from ever ascending the throne.

Min Yan or Yun YanFeng (both names are nice). Taking him away from his royal line sounds nice. It is fun to read about a prince or king but this is a nice twist. Which makes me wonder: has he much other brothers and sisters and does he knows about them (maybe an unrelated question)? Looks like he has a plan in his life that opposes that of someone else. How is it discovered that he is talented in cultivation?

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер The reason is the longevity of cultivators, and how easily the power could be abused. That doesn't mean a cultivator could never become a leading figure, or even Emperor, but the process of actually gaining the needed foothold, is not only complicated, but dangerous, bc it could cause infighting, and those who're not cultivators but also have a claim on the throne, would be forced away just bc they're not as strong as a cultivator. It's mostly avoided to not favour certain sects, or sow resent between royal families. It shows that all sects are equal, and that the sects are not going to be weaponised in royal matters. It's kind of a trust thing.
The exceptions is when there's a shift of the Royal family: Aka, a coup, and the former royal family has been... removed.
Or if there are no viable heirs otherwise. In that case I'd say there'd be a process for make sure that the cultivator doesn't stay in this position for too long, and has to give the throne over after a certain amount of time. Eg: Until their own children, or close family is old and wise enough to take over.

Sounds like there is a bigger goal than only living his life as a cultivator. Does Min Yan have some ambitions to claim the throne using his knowledge or the sect as his stronghold? And if a cultivator does not stay long in his position what do they do to them who are sitting there for a long time? What is interesting is the Ying/Yang balance that you created. Making Min Yan and ZhuZhao opposites from each other. I am curious at the point where there stories will met.

Iskana4 месяца назад#754780163.5)The sword was counted as a random treasure, which he basically just took from the royal treasury while, it was noticed, but only by servants, and honestly, non wanted to die by admitting they had lost it. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерIt never showed itself to be strong, or important or anything, it was just "another" pretty sword given to the Emperor as a tribute/spoil of war, so it was just thrown in there with other fancy, but ultimately average spiritual swords. But since it belongs to the Emperor, losing it could still mean death, no matter how useless it seems.
Even so, it's still something belonging to the Emperor, so if it's lost, it'd still bring grave consequences to anyone who knew about it. So it's better to be quiet, and just not talk about it, since the nobody cares anyway. Instead of mentioning and make them care.
Yanfeng keeps the sword, and trains with it for about 5 years, in which it never reacted to him much, only doing the bare minimum of what a spiritual sword should be able to do. Then later, in a siege on the "forbidden city" or whatever the Emperor's home is called, he manages to finally force it to actually react, and it immediately shatters when clashing with another powerful sword. He keeps his part, while about 1/3 of the blade gets left behind.
Zhou HuanZhao (as I also still call him) gets the forgotten piece, and it reacts to him, which makes him want to find out more. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI've got most of this written on a character-document detailing the how and why's. But basically, the reason why the sword finally reacted, was bc it reacted to Zhou HuanZhao's energy as he was close by. The force of its reaction to ZHZ, and the spiritual energy YYF had forcing into it, caused it to shatter from the clashing energies, and obviously the sword it clashed with.

It is a fun aspect that you hide the sword between regular swords. When i read this piece i wonder if the sword/parts of the sword are made from any particular material that you can't recognize on first glance (something like the special metal alloy with a high density that is used in rare asian swords in the past centuries). Or if it has a hidden inscription. Also the part that is not connected to the sword, how does it look like? Old swords are interesting. I also like that Zhou finds the part of the sword and i really want to know how he discovered it and how it works with his energy.

Iskana4 месяца назад#75478016Hah... goals... I've not got that much yet. I've been trying to bounce ideas off on friends, but most don't really know the xianxia/wuxia genre, so it's kind of a lost effort. I've only got a few small ideas currently, and I think I want it to be a step-by-step goal, where it begins with a pretty tame goal, but while that first goal is being worked towards, a new goal starts slowly manifesting. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерJust as an example, if a Hero's 1st goal is to save the Princess, he, while working towards that goal, he suddenly starts getting brought towards plot points, which start slowly creating a new goal. So after he saves the Princess, he's his new goal istrying to find out why the Princess was stolen, and who did it. I hope this kinda explains what I mean.
Goals are also close to problems. Instead of only giving a goal a problem also works. If it is his goal to safe a princess he will run into one or more problems. When he saved the princess some random evil dude does not like his action and starts to hunt the hero and princess down. The hero got a problem that he has to solve (or fails if it is not a happy ending).

Iskana4 месяца назад#754780164) I've kinda struggling, so I only got some small ideas around the goals.Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерYYF's goal originally is just to return home and find out what/why there was a coup against the Emperor Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер since he lived quite the sheltered life, and after the event, he immediately left the country. , and if anyone of his family, mother, and two sisters, survived. Later it becomes finding out more about ZHZ, since he finds out that ZHZ's family was part of the coup. He arrives at the place where he grew up in the forbidden city, and finds ZHZ in his old home.
Then sees the broken blade, and gets suspicious. At around that point, ZHZ tells him he doesn't talk about the specific happening from 10 years ago, but does mention certain key points to what happened.
ZHZ's goal... honestly, this is so much harder. I've been trying to figure his character out first and foremost. I'm trying to find a balance for his character personality, and then see what I feel would be his future within the story.
Yun Yanfeng is the MC, so I known him better, since I started with him, and allowed myself to put more familiar character traits into him, while I still struggle to really set, and write Zhou HuanZhao.
I spent an entire day trying to figure out why a one-shot I wrote, between them felt so wrong, until I realised I had made ZHZ snippy and sarcastic, he is the furthest from being like that. At least never on purpose.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI've been kinda stuck at how to go foreward, to be quite honest. I want ZHZ to ascend to Godhood again, or at least get something along those lines, but I've not quite figured out how. I've been looking at TGCF for the entire Godhood thing, and Idk how to really reach that point. It's kinda frustrating, since I know what I want in terms of plot points, but bc of a lack of plot-partner, aka, someone who can help me build the structure, it's been a pain trying to stitch the different points together, and make sense of them.
I had been playing around with ZHZ managing to complete his former God-Sword, which mixes with his current cultivation, which is heavily tied with his contact to the plant, and his healing-influenced cultivation, and forces him into a second acesion. Maybe sweeping YYF along with it, because his spiritual power is infused into the blade, and kept it "alive" in the 10 years it was broken, + the 5 years he tried to make it his by feeding it with his energy.
I've been going back and forthe with the ideas, because I kinda lack the know-how for writing, and the structure of the chapters. I've never been that good at writing, and I also don't wanna rip off some other novel by accident, because I just wanna get on with it. It's also kinda difficult since I'm kinda stuck in the chasm of "I want them to do this, but I obviously need to show the journey first, but Idk about their journey."

I'm sorry if this all just sounds like a mess, like I said, not that good at all of this. I do have a character sheet for both, but... it's still difficult.

You got some interesting aspects placed into your story. I do enjoy the read. The story has multiple goals and what makes it interesting are the strugles of the MC in the story to achieve the goals. The second character is not as detailed but i agree with what you wrote about not knowing everything about the character yet. You alteady got a lot of ideas and it is a real challenge to ad all details into one fitting story. What makes it difficult is that there are two story pattern into the story so far. The one of Min Yan and the one of ZHZ. I think when the focus is on one's story the role of the other will become more clear. Looks like with what i read in your last paragraph you are looking for a supporting character that can pull your main character through the story. I know how hard writing is. Serphiens story is actually the third attempt i take in writing. The other two story's i have tried i have dropped. And i know that i will face some struggles with my current attempt.
You got a lot of interesting ideas that could work. The intro of the story or the first chapter was for me always the most difficult one. Because of the introductions of the characters, surroundings, pulling the reader into the story. With this third attempt i write that chapter not first but start one chapter ahead of it to avoid those struggles in the first fase. After writing the rest i got back to that first part of the story.
Using character sheets is a good idea. I am looking forward to your progress in your story.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75415365Thanks, i am actually thinking to write down a fantasy story around mermaids (and horror). I actually started to enjoy writing down the story around the characters i have in mind (Not experienced with story writing but it is fun to try). It is raw draft and needs some more work. I do like horror stories and for that reason i will ad a bit of horror. For the story, i try to create a lot of different variants of mermaids that lives in different types of water and allows for different abilities. Below is a first draft about her backstory (without the conversations).
Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерBefore turning in the skeleton mermaid: Serphien is a small breed mermaid from the Tescane clamp (Mermaids like to use the term clamp instead of clan). They usally don't grow bigger than 40CM. They have small spikes on their spine that are highly toxic for any creature that touches them. Tescane mermaids might have small smooth breasts or being flat chested for aerodynamic reasons and which allowes them to turn quickly in the water. The Tescane clamp is also known for their collecting habits and naive thinking. They live in freshwater with less current. The eyes of Tescane mermaids are mostly yellow, brown or black. The color of their tails are also black, brown and in rare cases silver. The tailfin is made from Diamaid which cannot be destroyed as long as the mermaid is alive.
In 1757 Serphien and her five friends got tricked by a sirene (Sirenes are different from mermaids, my first idea was a witch but i didn't like it. The Sirene idea is two days old and i haven't thought about how to create this character including a name) that seeks revenge for losing her husband who was a sailor on the Zeelt. This VOC ship disappeared in 1672 and is last seen in a bay at Kaap de goede hoop. The sirene is convinced that the disappearing was caused by a group of small sized mermaids that are living in the Northsea by Denmark. Her husband which name is currently unknown had something secret on board that has to be brought to Kopenhagen. The sirene lures and punishes every small sized mermaid in the Northsea using human technologie in combination with one of her own scales (every sirene can use one of her scales to perform magic. The magic is activated by the sirenes voice). The SRD as she called it is a device that freezes the time on her victim and removes 75% of the body. Because of the imprisonment in time the victim cannot die.
The Sirene told Serphien and her friends that she has to steal someones heart if she wants to go back to their old self.
Serphien and her friends returned to their home caves in the Northsea. It was impossible for Serphien to hide her damaged body and not long after the Sirene incident she got banished by the Queen of the Ocean from their homes. It is for every mermaid forbidden in law to involve themself with any kind of sirene or to bypass death. Serphien and her friends actually did both.
From 1757 till now (or actually the point where she meets Laila) she and her friends are stealing heartshaped objects around the globe and collects them in some underwater caves around Belgium. In the 20th century someone discovered the collection of hearts and decided to create an attraction based on what he saw: 'The tunnel of love'.

Wow, this sounds great! There's a lot of thought put into this, and I like how there's a good structure for everything.
The species specifications for the Tescane clamp are really fascinating, and it's cool how specialised it sounds.
Sirens are always a dangerous endeavour, I'm surprised, in a good way, that the Siren was with a human, and actually loved him, and not like typical "I drown you for fun" type relationship Siren's have with humans.
It sounds like a really tragic story, and I feel really bad for the all the lil mermaids. Is there a specific reason why the Siren focuses just on small mermaids? Sounds like there are bigger ones she avoids.
I also wonder how divers would react to swimming through the tunnel of love, and there suddenly being a fish-bone mermaid. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI use fish-bone, since when I think of skeleton, I imagine the entire body being rotten and just bones, not a partial decay
I assume they reason for the requirement to get a heart to be fixed again, comes from the Siren having lost her love? or her "heart" when he died?
I totally get what you mean wanting to write, personal problem for me: Never have the energy for it. I wish you best of luck in your writing endeavours.

Making it in scale and keeping a distance from the real 1:1 scale is indeed the appealing thing. Making full size could be fun too but it misses some charme to it. Also i don't think a lot of theme's or styles would work in real sizes. On of the interesting things is that BJD's compared to their scale are very light in weight. That is a huge advantage when it comes to making things or props. How smaller the scale how more delicate you can make the custom props. That is certainly something that never could work in real sizes.

Probably. Let alone that some of the designs I've seen for dolls would probably be unable to hold up to a human's weight, if it was a 1:1 scale. I mean, a 1/3 is only 1/3 in size, not in weight.
That, and some furniture for small dolls, that I've seen, is also "allowed" to be more crazy/magical/whatever. I think certain types of fairy furniture wouldn't work in full scale, bc the magic would be lost. Or details would be too clunky.
And the obvious thing "They probably wouldn't fit in most people's actual living spaces in full scale" is a thing too I guess.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75415365That is certainly true. For example when you see a movie poster about a movie you haven't seen yet. You got some ideas about the character on the poster. And it is really surprising that the character could be so different from the idea that you have in mind. Including the outfit that not always say what the occupation or interest is of the character. That is also likable with dolls.

Oh definitely. I've had that with several anime I've watched, it's such a weird experience to see how much a character can differ from what you initial thought of them, just from pics, and random content.
Very likeable. I'd actually love to see people just give their first impressions of dolls when they see them. Of course with no prior input from others.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75415365 The big overlooked point of dragons is that they are easily misunderstood. Dragons can be good, evil and neutral with a lot different emotions and thoughts like humans. I fully agree. The evil dragon is overused and the good dragon is more a support character. It would be nice to see a story based on a land with the main characters being dragons with the good, neutral and bad ones conbined in the story. Adding light mods are really doable. The biggest issue aren't the wires or the placing of the batteries. The key is to keep the temperature of the lights in control.
The four additional arms are really interesting. A daring choice. I do like a lot of the out of the box ideas a lot of brands have. One year ago i would not expect to see a BJD that is based on a crab. I do like the particial human/animal BJD's. Also removable horns would be a nice feature. Magnets are a really easy and clean solution.

Yeah. I can also work with dragon hybrids or something, dragons who can turn into humanoids, but still have obvious draconic features, they kinda did that in the 2019 Nezha movie, which was interesting.
Also, Dragons have the benefit of being like dogs, in the sense that Dragons(as an umbrella term) doesn't just mean one type of dragon, but that there is a wide variety of dragons, like the European dragons, or Asian, Wyvern, etc.

I think one can get decently small batteris in some hobby shops for LED lights. Those also seem to be fairly temp-neutral depending on brand. As long as the body is big enough? Or maybe hide the batteries under the clothing, or something.

I like it when they're a lil out there, looks neat, but I get what you mean.
I wonder if they're making Zodiac type inspired BJD's, now that I look at them, Crab Bjd= Cancer. Mermaid with horns= Aries? Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерIf that's what they're going for, I really hope their Sagittarius won't be as boring as most I've seen. Maybe it's just me, but I always feel like certain Zodiac signs always draw the short straw in the design departement. ...

Magnets are simply the magic glue in the BJD world.

I see why you choose the pets over the 15% off. I think i would do the same. I don't know if they come with eyes included. I guess not. Which i do wonder, is it hard to find fitting eyes for small animal BJD's?
I am curious which style for the fur you have in mind. Are you going for a natural colorscheme or a different one? I love to see some photo's when they arrive. :D

Neat, I really wanna see it.

Hmhm, like 15% is all well and good, but I feel like it's hard to come across decently priced pets for BJD's, and since I already had accepted paying the dolls (full price) the pets felt more like a bonus to the purchase. They're all so super expensive. Like, when I compare them to the average doll prices.
+ if they're limited, it feels kinda cool to have one.
++ They're like organic accessories, so you get a little more life into the scene.
+++ I can already imagine them in a story context, so that's nice.

It's not too hard, I guess. I buy the eyes from Aliexpress so they can be pretty cheap. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI obvs would never buy a doll there, but they do have ok eyes and sometimes handmade clothes I like. I normally cross-reference to check if they copied a legit seller. Small eyes themselves aren't hard to find, there are a lot of 8mm to 18mm sellers. The bigger problem is honestly when you want eyes with small iris'es. Those are hard to find if you want a specific colours.
There are several "make your own eye"-sets, so that's a good option if you need big iris eyes, and wanna customise them yourself.
My dumbass managed to actually... lose the eyes? Well, not lose them as in "they disappeared" but I was cleaning my room, and now I can't find them. I know I put them away to avoid this exact situation. :/

I'm not sure yet. I think the AOW would look good in a semi-realistic colour scheme? With golds/reds for eath tones, and pale blue shading and silver for a white fur? Not sure.

Rajke5 месяцев назад#75340692 I totally agree. With a paintjob and especially the face-up the doll get his/her own personality. Leaving less space to see the character in the sculpt that you actually want. Even a certain color of shade in the face can put me of if it doesn't match with the character i have in mind. When i look at some BJD pages and i look to the painted doll and then to the blanc doll i can see often a total different character in the blanc sculpt. Min Yan is a great example of a sculpt that can be used in a lot of different characters. I do like his sculpt and his prince full set. I like his more traditional/historical appearance. Also his blanc head gives of a lot of personality too.
I have seen some results of carving and i like some of the results. It looks like a difficult proces to do.
Some company's give the choice for the skintone. Sometimes it also would help if the blanc doll on the pictures is presented in the skintones available to give a better impression. Especially for a fullset i want to see the face-up on different skintones because i don't believe every skintone could be used for a certain face-up.

Pretty much, can't really add much more, since you've said it.
One thing though, I'd like to see more pictures of the profile of the doll. It's really hard to sometimes discern how big/pouty the lips are, or how long a nose is.
    '
It was through the blank heads that I noticed that Min Yan, and Wu MinYan were two different headsculpts, since I spent ages trying to figure out, comparing their fullset photos, why the Prince, and Emperor faces looked so different even though it's the same character.

Then again, I've also noticed that some official face-ups look pretty... not great.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75340692 Hair and eyes can say a lot about the character. It can make but also break the image of the character. With eyes i can sometimes overlook that but with a wig i can't. The impact on the face is just too big. Before Infinity became available with her red colored wig i disliked her (she had a brown wig standard). That changed when she became available with her current wig.
With the most sculpts i prefer the M size of bust. Not to big or to small. With some more delicate looking sculpts i like the S size. S size busts can look so well with certain outfits or characters and if they aren't invincible for gravity. It rarely happens that i like a bigger bust size for any character. Push up busts are not my cup of tea but i do think that for some outfits it is a nice addition (prefferable if it is easy to change those with more natural ones). I have seen the XS sizes (alias flat) for certain dolls and i personally don't like them. What i do like is that the image on the shirt will be looking nice. My biggest con for the XS bust is because they often make the character looking incredible young.

Yup.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75340692 For males i do agree that a lot of sculpts look dehydrated. On some places on the body where the bones are just a little bit too visable. I do like the way where some muscles are created. It makes a male character more looking male. Especially around the stomach area. With some bodysculpts i have the idea that they are looking a bit too skinny.
I agree. The eyes are looking smaller these days but i also think the shape and colors have improved a lot. With dolls like Azone's pureneemo line i see the opposite. They use really big eyes.
DollChateau did the same when i asked for the sizes of Isabel. I was interested some time ago but something was putting me of. I actually now know what it is that puts me off. The way her lower lip is painted is bothering me. I don't like the heartshape in her lower lip.
It would be interesting to see some different body shapes. There are a lot of shapes made but there is a lack of more chubby designs (with the exception of childlike BJD's).
    I couldn't agree more.

Hmhm.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75340692 Shopping should be made a lot more easy. When i discovered Fuya on internet i couldn't find a shop where i could buy her. I went to the page of Doll Chateau and choose for a dealer in their connections named Octarinedolls. My experiences with them are good but i can understand that it can people back out of ordering if they can't find a trusty shop. Volks is for me the number one brand when it comes to difficulties. That is also the reason why i actually don't have bought a Dollfie Dream. I have tried it for ITEM #256131 but couldn't find my way through the maze to actually order and pay.
Sounds like you created a fallen God character. A really challeging and interesting choice.

Troublesome.

Rajke5 месяцев назад#75340692 Every character has his/her reasons to do the things they do. How bigger the change how stronger the goal must be. I am curious which reason you have in mind for giving up Godhood.
The plant is a nice idea. Have you thought about which flower you are going to use? It is a small detail but sounds like an important one. I am also curious how ZhuZhao uses the plant in his incarnation. Does he touch it, uses it's oil or doing something else to get the power from the plant? And what is his plan with the plant?
I am interested in Min Yan's role with the sword and what his goals are.
I don't think that using some cliche's are a bad thing for a story. It is not weird that some cliche's are still in use. I think it is key to use some unexpected things to counter cliche's.
Your story sounds interesting but what i miss is what kind of goals both characters have.

I think I should note that I've been considering just using a fantasy version of Asia for the story, just to make is easier to create the world the way I want it to. Same goes for different parts of Europe, and so on.

    1) I gave him Godhood bc the doll said that he's the Sun God ZhuZhao... I will not apologise for my lack of creative answer... Sorry.
    2) Not sure yet, I've looked at some healing plants, but I feel like it'd be ... weird? to try and take a known healing plant, and change it to fit him.

2.5) In this life he's a cultivator who's path depends a lot on healing, so that's his first real "connection" with it.

    3) Min Yan, or "Yun YanFeng, as I'm still calling him) is a ...
Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер The reason is the longevity of cultivators, and how easily the power could be abused.

3.5)The sword was counted as a random treasure, which he basically just took from the royal treasury while, it was noticed, but only by servants, and honestly, non wanted to die by admitting they had lost it.

Hah...

    4) I've kinda struggling, so I only got some small ideas around the goals.Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерYYF's goal originally is just to return home and find out what/why there was a coup against the Emperor Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер since he lived quite the sheltered life, and after the event, he immediately left the country. , and if anyone of his family, mother, and two sisters, survived.

Ohh, interesting. i like how it has current problems woven into it.
May I ask why they got banished? It sounds interesting?
Is Serphien a bone-mermaid -bc her design has the fishbone design- from the start, or is that something that happens later? Like, does she die, or is there just a type of mermaid that has the appearance of a fishbone?

Thanks, i am actually thinking to write down a fantasy story around mermaids (and horror).

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75190518Yup. I feel like it also opens up hobbies that in full scale (aka, making things for real human sizes) wouldn't be as appealing.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75190518Yeah. I think that's why I appreciate that most BJD companies do give the dolls visual-backstories, but in the end, you decide what you think their story is. Ie: A BJD wearing the robes of a healer, might not be a healer in your story. He could be an actor. Or someone hiding their identity. Or maybe, maybe you just want them to be a healer. Or nothing related to the design at all!
That is certainly true. For example when you see a movie poster about a movie you haven't seen yet. You got some ideas about the character on the poster. And it is really surprising that the character could be so different from the idea that you have in mind. Including the outfit that not always say what the occupation or interest is of the character. That is also likable with dolls.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75190518Yeah. I like it when dragons are shown as nuanced. I mean, good dragons/neutral dragons is what I favour, but obvs there'd have to be bad ones as well. I just feel like a lot of media will either show dragons as completely bad, or, when they're good, they're just tools/companies to humans, instead of their own group of beings.
I think with some mods that could be done. I've seen people change the ear shapes of dolls, and add horns, etc, so why shouldn't there be the posibility for some cool light-mods? Especially since you could probably hie the cabling inside the body, as long as you're careful?

The big overlooked point of dragons is that they are easily misunderstood.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75190518Yeah. It'd be neat to have the option you get a hornless head, or removeable horns. With the horns, it takes away the customisation aspect, even if her body is lovely!
The crabs are adorable. I will mention that I like that they have the option of hands, or crab claws for the extra arms, with the crabs.

    Iskana5 месяцев назад#75190518Cool, I'll definitely read it.
Congrats, that sounds like an epic find. I love victorian style furnitur. Especially the Divan seats they used to have. I can imagine that it looks quite... decadent? If that's the right word for it.

It gives more the antique vibe. I will definitely include the chair in the blog.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75190518Very nice indeed. None of them are prepainted, but that's fine. I feel like it'll be easier to paint the animals, since the fur/textures on animals don't have to be perfectly symmetrical... though the eyes on the Aow's worry me. The weird thing is that I can't really find what they'd normally have cost, so I only know that the Aow shading was 30 usd, and the Poi was 50 usd. Since I get two of each, 2 Aow, 2 Poi, that'd be around 160 just in shading... I feel more content with the extra animals, than the 15% I think. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерNow I just need to get some eyes for the Poi's, since I think they don't come with them. And of course, for my Kazari Kittens.
I'll try to at least get a few pics on here, if I remember. I'm really excited abou all the stuff, since it went from me getting 2 dolls, to getting 2 dolls, to also getting 6 extra pets, with 4 of them for free. (On that note, I also recieved my first set of extra eyes for the Min Yan doll, I do hope they'll fit.)

The spoilers can be read. The weird thing is that the second spoiler only opens when the first one is opened. Looks like the total amount of words has exceeded the posts limit.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718Yup. I could use my Min Yan as an example, he has a modern version as well, and that version really doesn't do it for me. I don't like the hair, nor the clothing, since I prefer the historic/wuxia/xianxia style more. I did like his Prince ver, but in the end it was his blank-face sculpt that won me over.
I feel like without that, I wouldn't have bothered, because I would have felt too intimidated with only his face-up, pictures. Meanwhile with the blank face, I can at least try to imagine my own style on the face, and think if my style would still do the face justice/look good enough for me.
It also reminds me of how some face-ups are done in a way that shapes the face differently. Idk much about make-up, but there's thing technique called "carving" and "nose pinching" the former is where the facial features are shaded in a way to change the facial shape visually into a sharper look, while the latter is supposed to make the nose look a lot thinner.
I've seen this used with a lot of official art, and if you compare that to the blanks, it's such a huge difference. So yeah, blank faces should just be common practice.

I totally agree.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718In the same vein, it'd be kinda neat to maybe also get different skin tones of the same sculpt, and maybe see the default face-up on the different shades. (thought I don't find this as necessary as a blank face, just a side thought)
Some company's give the choice for the skintone. Sometimes it also would help if the blanc doll on the pictures is presented in the skintones available to give a better impression. Especially for a fullset i want to see the face-up on different skintones because i don't believe every skintone could be used for a certain face-up.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718I also agree on the wig, and eye thing. I don't really like the look of the "Emo"-style wigs, or the bowl-cut style, and I feel like that could really turn me away from a doll, even if I might actually have liked the face, just bc I don't like that style of hair.
Hair and eyes can say a lot about the character. It can make but also break the image of the character. With eyes i can sometimes overlook that but with a wig i can't. The impact on the face is just too big. Before Infinity became available with her red colored wig i disliked her (she had a brown wig standard). That changed when she became available with her current wig.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718Yeah. That's why I wish companies would give the option of the push-up/bra bust, and a natural more "weighted down" bust, aka realistic.
Personally I also prefer S or M busts, in rare cases also "no boobs" option, aka flat. For adult dolls, obviously.
My current girl is an Angel of Dream, I think her bust is M? But not sure, and her bust is pretty natural looking, at least compared to most dolls I've seen.
Male bodies have the benefit of not having much in terms of "In real life affected by gravity" aspects to them. I personally will say, that while I do like the Loong Soul bodies of my two new boys, I do think they look a little dehydrated, but it's at least easier to deal with when they're clothed, and breasts that seem to float. You won't notice the overly detailed muscles when there are enough layers, but the busts unnaturalness would probably just be enhanced with the wrong clothes.
XS I think, is more around very flat, or very perky bust sizes, but I'm not sure. Not that they're often available anyway.

For males i do agree that a lot of sculpts look dehydrated. On some places on the body where the bones are just a little bit too visable. I do like the way where some muscles are created. It makes a male character more looking male. Especially around the stomach area. With some bodysculpts i have the idea that they are looking a bit too skinny.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718Hmhm, I think faces have gotten more realistic options in the past decade, with many manufacturers going for smaller eyes?
I feel like there's already a nightmare mode when searching for clothing, but I've found out that some manufacturers will help out with sizing if asked. Legenddoll seems to have that option for some of the clothes they sell.
But yeah, different bodies, would be nice. I already mentioned it, but I'd like to see more buff, or maybe even pudgy bodies. (I'll also add the different bust versions into that, push-up and weighted). For a hobby centered aroun making your characters, I sometimes feel companies miss out on not having these designs. Even if they'd only be limited, maybe just to test the waters?

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718Yeah, I used to like barbie when I was a lil girl, but I think at some point I just stopped being interested in them because they all were just... the same. BJD's, even if the bodies are the same, at least feel like different characters. You can see imperfections, have dimples, eyebags, etc. It's also fun since, you know, they are there to be customised, while toy-dolls are just made to be taken as they are and played with.
Every Barbie is a Barbie, every BJD is a different character.

    I couldn't agree more.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718It's very annoying, and I spent super long actually finding a good shop to buy from. I only accidentally stumbled onto ACBJD when watching an unboxing video, and in the end, their layaway program allowed me to order the dolls I wanted.
I also found BJDCollectasy by accident, and turns out, they got some pretty neat features. I mean, they shop links are super neat, but their DIY section is also really helpful. They have a section for how to make scars, or small dresses, and many other clothing articles. Like, I've been considering to making their crinolin for my male characters, to work as fake layers for their robes, to avoid having to make several robes, or spending too long to figure out how to make fake-layers on the main robes.
I honestly don't get companies that make shopping difficult. Do they want people to avoid them or something? Sure, the people who really want a doll are gonna find a way, but if someone just thinks about getting a doll casually, but then have to spend an eternity muddling their way through the order page, and then just give up, that's a lost sale, and a lost customers, who might have come back later.

Shopping should be made a lot more easy.

    Iskana5 месяцев назад#75211718Yeah,
Well, the idea around ZhuZhao's Godhood, is that he used to be a martial God, he never really was a god of any specific place, more like a God you prayed to, on the side from your actual main God. While the main God would be prayed to for Victory. ZhuZhao was prayed to, to ensure ones saftey, or at least dying a hero/not dying in vain. After several decades of this, he decided to give up his Godhood which meant he'd fall from "Heaven" and die as a mortal.
I'd say it'd be a spoiler to say why he decided to give up on his Godhood, but I've honestly not really decided on his reason yet, so for now he just did it, and I'll figure it out later.
Since I've noticed Xianxia/Wuxia novels like to be dramatic, I decided that his death fed a dying plant when his blood hit it. (So dramatic) The plant recieved some of his Godly essence, and preserved them, becoming a healing plant, used by healers for generations to come. Meanwhile his spiritual weapon sucked up some of his leftover godly spiritual essence, and became more or less sentient. Slowly accumulating resentment with each lifeteime/reincarnation ZhuZhao didn't find it.
The story kinda starts in the lifetime where ZhuZhao has started cultivating, in a path focused on healing, yeah I know it's cliche, he now works with the plant he once brought into existance centuries ago and the character Min Yan plays, took the sword. ZhuZhao cultivating is the first step for him to actually be able to use spiritual energy, and actually feel it, something he/his soul hasn't been able to, since he died as a God.
Turns out ZhuZhao also has a weird obsession with the sword when he finds a broken piece of it, even though he doesn't know why.
When/If he gets his sword back, he'd be able to get part of his Godly spiritual essence back... but at what price? *dramatic music* I know it's kinda cliche, and not the best story, but I've just been casually imagining the story, so it's all just a WIP and a lot will probably change along the way.

Sounds like you created a fallen God character. A really challeging and interesting choice.
Every character has his/her reasons to do the things they do.
About cliche's, the story does not come over as a cliche.
Your story sounds interesting but what i miss is what kind of goals both characters have. I love to read some more about it. Another interesting thing is the sword. It is mentioned as an opposite of the flower. I really like that idea.

I think everyone has some kind of interest into something that can be considered as different or weird towards others. The big difference lies in if people dare to follow their heart or not. On places like collectors fair there are a lot of people that are interested into something but haven't the guts to actually buy it because of what others think.

    Pretty much. I agree!

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75050118 I agree. The blanc face shows the doll as it is. Even if the face up is not to our taste then it is possible to apply one that we like by ourselves or a face up artist. It gives also a better impression of what is possible. When i see a doll i have some kind of idea of her background in mind and a wrong facial expression can ruin that. Also with a blanc head you can also see which expressions or character would be possible. A wig, face-up and the eyes are the things that can make or brake the look of the face. And without a blanc face it is difficult to see through the beauty of the face itself. It sounds weird but a wig can really break the looks of a doll for me. It is also one of the first things that i notice about a doll and it is sometimes hard to see through that (Smartdoll Justice and Doll Chateau Elizabeth are great examples of that). Luts (Delf line) is a company that makes really beautifull dolls. The sad thing is that they hardly ever place photo's of the body and blanc face on their product pages. They make such beautifull dolls but you can never see what you actually buy.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75050118 When scrolling through the Loongsoul bust option i see what you mean. I am not a fan of push up busts. With those kind of busts there is a too big limit on the clothing you can use on the dolls. When i look for a doll i want one that can fit most of the clothingstyles i have in mind. When it is also a stringed doll it is a too much struggle to change the busts. You are totally right about the M and L busts. Looks like they are too round and somehow floating. With the bigger sized busts this is too easy to notice. I do like the M bust for that reason better than the L bust. I notice that a lot of company's are guilty of that. I do like Dream Vally's bust sizes S and M. What i also miss are the body lines around the busts which also makes them less realistic. They do that a lot better with their male body's. With some of the outfits Loongsoul designs, the female busts looks really good. But gives a limit on the amount of clothing you can use. I have heard about the XS busts. As far as i know they are only used on dolls that wear clothing with a print on it. I don't like them because of the lack of realism.

It is certain the opposite from what we like about the BJD's. The lack of facial details is what they are lacking in character. I never found the unrealistic Barbie like body nice looking. The anatomy of the dolls that are considered toys is most of the time incorrect what also doesn't appeal to me. The faces are often symetric which looks of to me.

The 'queen of the ocean' (no name currently) were she works for wants to use that technology to get rid of the junk in her ocean. The 'queen of the ocean' is also the same person who has banished Serphien and five other mermaids from the Meria clan out of her kingdom. I like to write some short stories but this is the first time that i think about writing down a whole world.

With Licensed characters that creativity lies by the creator and puts a limit on your own creativity. I love stories about dragons. The stories where the dragons are misunderstood stands out to me. Also i like the way they can be portraited in many ways from kind, neutral, good to downright evil.
I also like the idea to ad some lights in (semi) transparant parts. If it is possible to place lights in a certain way it would give a very cool effect. Fun thing is that lights and batteries are getting smaller which makes it possible.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75050118 Huajing makes indeed very nice sculpts. The option that i can't put a wig on her head puts me off as well. However i do like the expression of the faces. When i looked up Huajing i found their Crab BJD designs which have gorgeous faces. A mermaid with the crab head would be looking nice i think. The paintjob on Huajing prototype dolls looks amazing. :D

Yeah. It'd be neat to have the option you get a hornless head, or removeable horns. With the horns, it takes away the customisation aspect, even if her body is lovely!

The crabs are adorable. I will mention that I like that they have the option of hands, or crab claws for the extra arms, with the crabs.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#75050118 It was dissapointing to find out that i made a mistake in using the right scale. On the other hand i had a lot of fun restoring those props. I will definitely make a blog about those. Speaking about props, today i have bought a 1/4 scaled couch for Serphien. The couch is made in victorian style and it seems that it is restored. I also got some ideas from it to use in my own design. This couch is a lucky find.
Seems like a nice deal. Most of the smaller BJD pets are limited or only included with certain dolls. They can be expensive too. Are the two pet's prepainted? They are really cute designs. :D I really want to see the photo's when they arive.

    Cool, I'll definitely read it.

Congrats, that sounds like an epic find. I love victorian style furnitur. Especially the Divan seats they used to have. I can imagine that it looks quite... decadent? If that's the right word for it.

Very nice indeed.

Most people around me know that I have weird interests, so I guess they don't really notice it too much with me?

We have a nice saying around here: 'Being normal is being boring'. I think everyone has some kind of interest into something that can be considered as different or weird towards others. The big difference lies in if people dare to follow their heart or not. On places like collectors fair there are a lot of people that are interested into something but haven't the guts to actually buy it because of what others think.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#74765908Hmhm, it's kinda annoying, bc I just wanna see the dolls I ordered.
Another reason is bc I for some dolls, I would like to see the non-painted faces. I feel like all doll companies should just have pictures of the unpainted faces, + any alternate bodies. I really wanna see what the face looks neutral, since it's easier to see the details. Like smiling mouths/gentle, it's kinda hard finding mouths that have that, especially when it's hidden behind the face-up.

I agree.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#74765908I personally, for example, don't like LoongSouls female busts, since I'm not a big fan of the balloon chest, on the M and L chests. (the gravity defying aspect just looks weird, even if it's not bad when clothed, I'd like to be able to have it look "normal" when they wear less.) Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI've seen a few video reviews of the bodies were it doesn't look too bad, but non specify if it's the old, or new body. And it's kinda bothersome trying to figure that out in general with many busts, not just loong soul. Apparently they do have S-chests, and even XS(Not sure) but there's no body showing those off, so Idk if the S actually exists, or if that's a mislabeling. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлер They have a female body on the chinese site that has a smaller bust, which I'd call an S or XS, but it doesn't really tell the size. And they have a doll, Qing, who's labelled with an S-bust but there's literally not a single picture of the body for comparison..
Sorry, rambling again, about my pet peeve with busts... Guess that's one side were the males shine. They don't have strange looking chest areas, at least not when it comes to defying gravity.
Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI just want some more normal looking busts, the push-up bra aesthetic just doesn't do it for loose clothes, robes, or more "open" clothing. Companies should just offer two types of bust, push-up, and natural. I know some companies have more natural busts, which is great, but those normally seem to be for the smaller busts, and larger ones get pushed again.

When scrolling through the Loongsoul bust option i see what you mean.

Hmhm, it's awesome. Just another aspect of why it's such an appealing hobby. It allows for so much creativity.

Not only her name but also her backstory became more clear. Serphien has a more unfortunate backstory and i recently discovered that Laila's backstory fits into the same realm. Laila is from the Dremmaride clan that lives on the land to learn about the humans modern technology. The 'queen of the ocean' (no name currently) were she works for wants to use that technology to get rid of the junk in her ocean. The 'queen of the ocean' is also the same person who has banished Serphien and five other mermaids from the Meria clan out of her kingdom. But ACBJD CS was nice enough to offer me another event-bonus Loongsoul had done, which also happened after I ordered my dolls, which was Loongsoul including two free pets for every full doll (I think it was full doll) ordered. So since I ordered two dolls, ACBJD told me, they could include two of Loong Souls Pet-Aow, looks like a lil Lion with horns, and two Pet-Poi, looks like an Axolotls Dragon hybrid, for free into my order.
They were quite helpful about it, and I was positively surprised that they were able to even include me in that promo. Honestly, I'm probably more happy with the extra pets, than I would have been with the 15% off, just bc it's so difficult finding cute pets, and the Pet-Aow is actually one you normally can only order with a specific doll(which I didn't order), so getting that one for free for my two dolls, was a pretty neat deal.

Seems like a nice deal. Most of the smaller BJD pets are limited or only included with certain dolls. They can be expensive too. Are the two pet's prepainted? They are really cute designs. :D I really want to see the photo's when they arive.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#74468726It is nice that you have a close friend who accepted and thinks the dolls are cool. A neutral opinion is also a good sign. My family knows about me collecting dolls and the reaction differs. It is also the reason why i keep the dolls away from my friends because i have no idea how they will react. they do know about the figure collection.

Most people around me know that I have weird interests, so I guess they don't really notice it too much with me?

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#74468726 I agree, when you search for a specific doll unboxing video i can't find it. The only exception is Doll Chateau's Isabel which video was a really good one. Also the enthausiasm of the owner is why i like these video's. It gives a lot of charm to the hobby.
When i look through male BJD body's it surprises me how often they are made in one part from neck to hips. It would be logical that the bust would work in a similar way like a female's chest. Looks like there is a missed opportunity in the male body design. It would be a cool feature if not only the chest is interchangeable but also the belly. If i look at some male body designs i think something like that could be technical possible. Instead of the bust that can be changed the hip part should be made in some kind of bowl shape where an interchangeable belly and bust can be placed on. Some kind of three part body with an extra joint between hip and belly. Or if it is stringed some kind of tube/hose that acts as the spine to keep the three part body sturdy. There are as much different female as male body's which would make this an incredible cool feature.

Hmhm, it's kinda annoying, bc I just wanna see the dolls I ordered.
I personally, for example, don't like LoongSouls female busts, since I'm not a big fan of the balloon chest, on the M and L chests.

Yeah, there's a lot of potential, and sometimes it feels like they don't grab that. I mean, I got my first dolls in 2012, and it seems that there hasn't been much change in those years, which is a pity. They look great, no doubt, but some tweaking here and there would be nice. And I get it's not cheap to make new bodies, but man, it'd be nice to have some minors... customisation options.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#74468726 The face-up is in many dolls so detailed and realistic that it could people creeping out by them. I have shown a co-worker a few pictures of some random BJD's that i liked (without saying a word about owning or buying them, i did that some years ago with figures too before i told anyone about collecting figures) and asked for an open opinion about them. The first reaction was: 'Where do you find these kind of things'. Two other notes where about the big amount of details (including the realistic looking outfits) and especially the detailing in the eyes. In her opinion some dolls had too realistic looking eyes in combination with a lifelike expression.
Now i am wondering if the things that are liked by the BJD owners and makers are the same things why other people don't like/ are creeped out by the BJD's? And if the outfit also plays a part into this?
I like his design. He has a nice confident and kind looking face. The way she poses him in the photo's is really admirable. She brings out the character really well. Frøya is a well made BJD too. The outfits of her dolls are really amazing and detailed.

Makes sense. Most people are used to the minimalistic faces you get with most toys you get in toystores, or the stylised looks, and then seeing such a level of detail, with seperate eyes and all that other stuff, must really be weird.

Probably. I've seen some people dislike the removable wig and eye aspects, bc it seems freaky to rip someone's eyes out, or just have this "weird" transition from head to headcap Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерthe part that's attached with a magnet at the back of the head, and wig.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#74468726 I totally agree. With the zero tolerance about recasts (which is understandable) including talking about it means that there is no info about those things. It is weird to think about. As a community you don't want that others and especially newbies buy recasts. But with the no talking about it policy the community does nothing to inform others about the recasts. If this important information won't be shared it is impossible to prevent potential buyers to buy recasts. I still hope there comes a time that it would be allowed to talk about recasts on the BJD related fora. And i also hope the experienced people will share their knowledge about recasts. Only then we can actually do something about recasts instead of looking the other way with a zero tolerance.

Yeah, it's curious. I mean, in the Anime figure community we openly talk about recasts/bootlegs, and most people are pretty chill about it, and I feel like it helps people more to be like that. Sure it's more mass produced, but the awarness and openess is probably helpful for newbies, and therefore as a result, also for the rest of the hobby.
Also doesn't help that it's kinda hard to find the genuine sites. In the anime community you have a pretty easy time to find legit sellers, meanwhile there's a real treasure hunt trying to find the right places to buy.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#74468726 Looks like you got a really interesting character bio for Lin BanYi. It looks like you have some interesting points to create an actual story. I love the idea that he might got in trouble for giving out the information about the human culture for free. I can imagine that there is some demon, human or other humanlike creature has a problem with him sharing that information.

Quite a few actually. He also has some relevant books about the Gods, and Lords of the Demonic plane, and of course, it's one thing having these books in a private library, but in one open for just anyone? That doesn't sit right with several figures from these places. There's also kinda like more "exlcusive" info, like cultivational novels Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI'm such a sucker for that genre, it's like the Asian version of Witchers, but with flying swords books about war tactics, and basically everything big shoots would prefer stays private, and away from the public.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерIf you want elaboration on that, I'd do it via a PM, since I prefer a more controlled environment for some of the story ideas. I also want to know how the original designer/sculptor thinks about name changes. I can imagine that when a sculpt is close to heart it is difficult to see others giving another name to it.
I haven't seen her version of Fuya until you mentioned it in your post. She looks awesome and she is indeed worlds apart from Serphien. I do like what she did with the Fuya sculpt (I would give her a black long hairstyle wig and different eyes). The way she painted the spine is really cool. The name she gave her (Gehenna) is a creative one too. But i have to laugh about the how she pose her for the photo's (The main photo of Fuya by DC was in a similar pose on a wooden background). It is a great example how many different characters there exists in one sculpt.

I knew it! Sometime one just has to hold the doll, to find the name.
It's a very sweet name, very creative again. Sometimes the names hit one when we read random words. Haha!

Maybe. I mean, some dolls seem to have an entire story behind them, and then someone buys it, and just changes it all. Then again, there'll always be only one original story to the doll, the "true-canon" of it. *thinks* It'd be interesting to see a sculptors, and design creators ideas and opinions, tbh.

Hmhm, it's awesome. Just another aspect of why it's such an appealing hobby. It allows for so much creativity.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#74468726 I am not a big fan of resin in combination with chemicals. I do think there is a limit on the amount of face-ups or bodyblushings that can be done in total.

Idk what they use for dying, but since it's such a popular way to get specific colours, I guess they've found ways that doesn't hurt the integrity of the material. (Miss-Mantis on tumblr has quite a few projects around dying the dolls.)

I wouldn't want it to be a one-time hobby either, since it's such a longterm commitment. But I do wish there would be more people who'd dare take that step, if they have the means to enter it. Just so there'd be more content, and more ways to experience it as well. Figure collecting has some short-term hobbyists, but there are also quite a lot of long-term folks, and something like that'd be neat for BJD's. More open as well.

In that case i hope that her body won't be made from transulent resin (That can also be cool if you try to make some half ghost effect).

I guess it's bc it's most licensed figures being made, and Oc-characters often lean towards a more... adult side, rather than jus casual mythical beings.
I have a friend who used to draw a lot of dragons, so she pulled me into it. Now, years later, I just really like the mix of dragons, and epic stories, it just stuck with me from my kid days. Personally, I really favour stories where the Dragons are good, or neutral, not just mindless beasts, or the enemy, like in some fantasy stories.

Semi-transparent resin is a good middle ground I think. It has the quality, "shine-through" and etheral "glow" to it of translucent resin, but the slightly more opaqueness, gives a creative leeway. Completely translucent resin, to me at least, probably fits better for garage kits, and basically any "non-moveable" resin kits. Since it minimises the chance for scratching once finished.

Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерRajke5 месяцев назад#74468726 That is a really cool body blushing on the Laraine sculpt. I also like the small references to China with the coin and hair. The koi spots are very realistic.
It is a very nice aspect that artists and sellers include something personal. It indeed makes a doll more your doll. The experience with unboxing Serphien is something i haven't seen before. With Serphien there was also a small goodie in the box with a note from the shop where i bought her. The experience is really amazing and the care that they placed in packing, the personal note and stuff is highly visible on the doll itself.
For a diorama i made almost two years ago i am making some horror props and learning from that. In december i bought an old dollhouse set to practice and restore on and i have finished the third prop today (I actually enjoyed the proces of restoring old stuff). The bad thing about it was that i was thinking that i make props on 1/12 scale. Which isn't (it is smaller than 1/12 scale). The result is that i can't use them with Figma. However they do work with Nendoroid. This also gives me the opportunity to figure out which scales work with Nendoroid. I have learned some new things and i also got some ideas and inspiration for furniture on 1/3 scale. I am also thinking about a new color scheme for 1/3 scaled furniture than i am currently using.

Same, it's very cute and creative. I also like the stand, gives it another hint of "underwater" with the Lotus stems.

Reminds me: Huajing also has a mermaid horror type doll. Not my style, since I like the option to have hair, but it still looks cool. The fin is really funky.

Hmhm, agreed. I also feel like it feel almost... more "alive". Weird as it may sound, with that added care.

Sizing is always a pain, and figuring out the right scale, to me at least, always turned into a hassle. I wish you the best of luck. I got my own dollhouse, with some random calico-critters, and re-ment furniture for my nendos, back some time ago, just to have a place to display some of my double nendos.

Learning by doing, I hope it makes the 1/3 process easier. It's great to be able to feel inspired by prior successes. (or even mistakes :P )

I think my personal fave, is Laraine, I just found this face... body-up? of her as a white koi with red/black spots, with Lotus flowers, it looks great. That is a really cool body blushing on the Laraine sculpt. I also like the small references to China with the coin and hair. The koi spots are very realistic.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#74441727I've seen people buy from private-doll sellers, and it's really interesting to see what the artists includes, small notes, small goodies, very cute. Especially those "adoption paper" type certificates. Those are interesting, since they seem to just add another level of personality to the doll. It's not just "a doll", it's "your" doll.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#74441727Hmhm, I know what you mean. Just getting that specific tone you want for your collection, in the end it's probably much more satisfying making it yourself, bc you know what you want. I hope you'll show the stuff you make, I'm curious what the theme of comedy horror... horror comedy? Humour Horror? Will bring. : D
Also i like your ideas about making doll clothing. I hope you will show your results. :D

Iskana5 месяцев назад#74441727Well, I think those who sell BJD's, are themselves very into the hobby as well, at least enough to know how much a doll can mean to someone, so it's just natural for them to feel like they have to help and protect their customers dolls. (And the customer reviews I guess, but I like to imagine the main reason is bc they actually care. ACBJD has pretty amazing and friendly customer service, for example. Посмотреть спойлерСпрятать спойлерI've got a small story for that, if you're interested. )
I am really interested in your story about ACBJD.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#74441727I think it it's brittle? That's how I understand it. Like, it's more prone to breaking when cold.
Sounds like a topic to search for information. It is an interesting question and i am curious about the answer. I will try looking up some information about it.

Iskana5 месяцев назад#74441727Messanger on MFC ain't the best either, it kinda lacks the orderly system from some other sites I used in my youth. Or maybe I've just been spoiled by sites like Discord that are more clean?
I'd recommend discord, it's a pretty ok way to keep in contact with people.

Reminds me of where the social media started years ago with MSN (some early variation of windows messenger) and Hyves. :)
