Recently my image hosting decided to call it quits without informing me. This caused all my blogs on MFC to have their pictures gone.

Re-uploading and re-linking all the images is a long task. If you are reading this and are interested in the blog below, please leave a comment and I will give fixing that specific blog priority.

Thank you for checking out my blog!

! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Yami Bakura ENTRY #4878 from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ENTRY #22169 ! This figure ITEM #119376 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga series created by Kazuki Takahashi. It tells the story of the young boy Yuugi Mutou who lives together with his grandfather that owns a game shop. From a young age Yuugi has always been playing games by himself, since he gets bullied a lot at school. One day he solves an puzzle that turns out to be an ancient artifact from Egypt! The artifact, called the Sennnen (Millenium) Puzzle, gives him a wish. Yuugi being a lonely boy, wishes that he would get friends. The artifact makes his wish come true, but in exchange a spirit can take over his body whenever he wants! This spirit is called "the other Yuugi" or "the dark side of Yuugi" and is the complete opposite from the Yuugi that has solved the puzzle. The other Yuugi loves to play Shadow Games, which makes the losing player in the game lose something that is very important to them... Later on in the series, Yuugi gets on better terms with the spirit inside him and they can talk together or change the host of the body at will.

The original series (manga 1-7 and the first televion anime) is about a lot of different games, mainly played as "Shadow Games" by "the other Yuugi". The second adaption of the series (manga volume 8 and further and the anime called Duel Monsters) almost completely focusses on an extended version of the cardgame that gets introduced in the beginning of the series.

Telling too much about the character Yami Bakura would give spoilers, so I'll keep his background short: Similar to Malik, Bakura has an evil split personality side. This figure is from that split personality and this specific moment the figure is posed after, is after his appearance in season 2 of the series. This makes him fit very well with the Malik ITEM #166660 and Yami Malik ITEM #119377 also released by Kotobukiya.

The reason why and how I got him

As with other Yu-Gi-Oh! figures by Kotobukiya: It was a no-brainer for me to hit the pre-order button, as I am a huge fan of this franchise. Extra bonus points for me to be excited about him was when I saw he was going to have a bandaged arm, a very important plot point in season 2.

Original art

Yami Bakura has multiple battles with this specific look, but his pose seems to be most modelled after:

Just as with the other figures in this line, the box is colorful and in a similar palette as the figure itself. The side- and backpanel show the Millennium/Sennen Ring.

The official artwork on the front and top is very nice, although it would have been nice if it were artwork that fully resembles the figures' pose.

The figure comes with main body, an alternative arm, hand of cards and a loose card. And when I saw in the blister that the front of the cards still do not have any detail, I got a bit annoyed during my unboxing to be honest. Still doing that while the release price of the figure was ¥9K...

Looking at the figure itself cheered me up a lot, though! That posing and expression is so fitting for him! And I was so glad that they didn't tone down the amount of blood on his bandage!

Before I put on his arm with the duel disk, I wanted to show the detail on the bandage, as his shirt covers about half of it. It is a nicely applied decal that looks a tiny bit rough when looked at from this up-close, but gives a very good fading color impression from a distance.

The Figure - with duel disk

With the duel disk attached, he looks even more menacing! Which makes me wonder why they decided to give him an alternative arm so similar. Especially considering the pose always has him holding the cards, it seems to not make sense to display him without duel disk. It would have maybe made more sense if one of the arms came with a bandage and the other without.

Looking at all the details!

His face has quite a lot of details in sculpt, especially the wrinkles inbetween his eyes and the nicely sculpted mouth. His eyes are nicely applied decals and surprisingly the eyebrows are handpainted.

Yami Bakura's hair is very heavy in details and layers, but unfortunately with that, we also come to the worst part of this figure.

Just how does he come with a lot more defects, paint chips, missed spots and botches in the sculpt as a 2015 figure, when they have been making Yu-Gi-Oh! figures in this line with more complicated hair sculpts looking a lot better since 2012?! At this point it felt a bit to me like they did a rushed release because of the figures in this line selling so well...

Luckily the rest of his hair looks a lot better. The movement, thickness and shading is nice. You can see a few small gaps where the hair got attached.

I like how the side of his face looks, nice movement in hair with not a lot of defects and I like how the ear is sculpted.

The rolled up sleeves on his blue jacket are a nice touch. Also notice how Yami Bakura is the least muscled from the Yu-Gi-Oh! male villains.

My specific copy of this figure has a botched ring finger and some leftover black paint on his hand. The small defects keep on piling up...

As icing on the cake, enjoy a close-up from Kotobukiya skipping on card details. I really hope that when Kotobukiya picks up this line again (it has been silent for a year now) and they make characters holding cards, that there will be actual card details... This almost wants to make me print out pictures of their cards and glue it to the figure myself.

The other side of his hand is shaded quite nicely and the backside of the card shows a correct backing.

Yami Bakura's jacket has a surprisingly nice amount of shading and sculpted wrinkles. Nothing to complain here and the movement is nice.

The attachment of Yami Bakura's left sleeve at the jacket is a bit crude. You can still see a bit of empty space.

Luckily his duel disk is spot on. The amount of cards he holds in both hands and the screen showing 4000 Life Points, indicate that this is his first turn and he is about to lay down his first card. I do hope that the quality of the decals has improved with Kotobukiya, as I have problems with my 2012 Seto ITEM #91371 his decals 'drooping' after a few years of displaying. Only time will tell with this figure.

We can't forget Yami Bakura's main jewellery! The Sennen/Millennium Ring has a bit rough spots here and there, but the overall sculpt is very nice. Especially the movement in the loose points at the bottom are so fitting with the rest of his posing.

The inside is just as detailed, glad to see they did not skip out on that!

An user also earlier mentioned that some figures in this line have actual chain for their necklace, but this figure has PVC 'rope'. For the posing of this figure (and to prevent transfers on the shirt) it's better to have the PVC here, but it would have been a nice touch if it were actual rope.

A striped shirt is something any manufacturer easily could get problems with when it comes to painting. The paint here is not perfect, but still quite nicely done considering how precise this is.

Let's also take a moment here to appreciate his upper body sculpt and the wrinkles in his shirt.

Meanwhile, please appreciate the detail they have put in his crotch area. I like how the wrinkles in the jeans fabric seem really realistic for someone bending forward a bit.

Unfornately none of that detail at the front is to be seen at the back. It seems like they did not even finish sculpting his back pockets...what went wrong here?!

The bottom half of the back his legs are a lot better looking, with many sculpted wrinkles and a lot of shading.

Just like a lot of other YGO characters, Yami Bakura wears very 90's looking sneakers. The detail on them is OK and the paint is a little simple.

Luckily the base of this figure is very nice, lots of detail, lots of shading. Reviewing this figure is up and down and up and down and...gasps

Just like the others of this series, the bottom of the base does not have any details and just shows copyright markings. Yami Bakura is screwed with his feet to the bottom of the base and can't be removed.

The Points

Positive
- Extremely in-character facial expression.
- Lovely posing and lots of shading.

Neutral
- Reviewing this figure was like jumping to a negative thing after every positive thing and left me with mixed feelings.

Negative
- Still no details on the front of the cards, Kotobukiya you can't keep on pulling this with the prices of these figures!
- More sculpt/paint errors than you would expect on a figure this price range and from this line.

The Scores

Sculpting 6/10
I have to give some credit for nice sculpting of wrinkles, facial expression and so on, but there are just way too many strange defects (missing part of a finger, messy attachment of hair, disappearing back pockets etc.) that do not match even older releases in this line.

Painting 7/10
There was quite a lot done with shading, especially on his pants, jacket and in his hair, which is very nice. Still, there are too many let-downs (mainly being small paint transfers) to give this figure a number any higher.

Posing 8/10
Very in-character, lovely pose. The alternate display option does not make a lot of sense, though.

Base 8/10
Nicely detailed and shaded, and fitting with the rest of the line.

Packaging 8/10
Nice packaging design fitting with the rest of the line.

Enjoyment 8/10
Considering I'm a really big fan of Yami Bakura and I really wanted him to be together with the rest of my Yu-Gi-Oh! collection, my enjoyment of this figure is higher than I actually should be considering his quality.

Conclusion

He has a huge amount of letdowns considering his release date and release price. Kotobukiya dropped the ball on this one, and I'm happy the next one in the line, Atem ITEM #450031 / BLOG #39944 is a huge improvement in quality. My specific copy of Yami Bakura has a strange botched finger and multiple paint defects that could be bad luck, and could be non-existent on another copy of this figure. If this really is the average quality of the Yami Bakura's out there, I would only recommend him to big Yami Bakura fans and/or completionist collectors. Maybe his re-release in 2017 improved some points? I really hope so!

Availability

Shortly after his first release in 2015 his price skyrocketed. His original release wasn't advertised very well and it seemed like not many people pre-ordered him, making him really sought-after on the aftermarket. After the re-release 2 years later, his price dropped back to his ¥9K release price. Nowadays he seems to sell for ¥8,5-9,5K with not much price difference between new and second hand ones.

And to finish it!

And here he is temporarily displayed with some other Yu-Gi-Oh! characters!

Only after viewing this picture on my computer, I realised I should move Atem to the middle and probably pose Yami Malik and Yami Bakura facing eachother. Especially Yami Malik with his 'come at me' pose and Yami Bakura with his 'ready to make his first strike' pose make a really good display when set across from eachother. I will experiment some more with that after unboxing my other Yu-Gi-Oh! main characters!

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about Banpresto's Chi-chi ITEM #129518 .

Shuuru1 год назад#41539521Thank you for the review. I've been trying to get him for a while but everytime I check Mandarake he is just too pricey. I'm waiting for another release or just something that's not over 11000 yen.

Thanks for liking the review! :) 'm doubting if they will re-release Bakura again as he seems a lot less popular than the other figures in this line. I now looked into it again and it seems like he actually raised a bit in price again compared to the moment I wrote this review. It's a bit hard to put a price value on him. I actually already felt a bit 'eh' about paying the full retail price for his quality, but on the other hand his face is so amazing and I'm just happy that there is a Bakura out there to complete my collection. So I guess it depends on how much of a fan you are of him how much he is worth! ;)

CrowMaiden2 года назад#35235201I'm glad I passed on him, he's nice but I'm not a big enough fan of Bakura where I would have been completely happy with the final product of him. Thanks for the review!
I'm still hoping they do some ladies as well in this line, I need Ishizu to go with her brother.

Yeah, he's really meant for the fangirls and completionists. Thanks for liking the review!

This line focusses on male characters, but I would love Koto to pick up some more females in their regular lineup! Ishizu would be very nice! :)

victorviper2 года назад#34897246Once again, I don't know too much about the character, but the sneering face and the blood (!) are kind of interesting features.
Yu-Gi-Oh cards are smaller than regular playing cards, right? However, even so, it looks like the cards are really, really, really small when compared to the size of his fingers!

His face is so perfectly in character, every YGO fan loves it. :) The blood is a very important plot point of the series, so I was happy to see it was included too!

Correct, those cards are a bit smaller than regular playing cards, but so far they come out looking even smaller on every of these figures. I think Koto re-uses the card sculpt for all of them. I do have to add there that in the drawing style of YGO, everyone has HUGE hands, example:

https://orig00.deviantart.net/7546/f/2016/173/f/c/seto_kaiba___render_2_by_alanmac95-da5u5bm.png

So I actually did not pay attention to it before your comment. Now I have a bit of mixed feelings about it, haha!

I'm a bit scared as it's been more than a year since Atem's release and I haven't heard any news since then. D:

I personally really like the manga. I think the drawing style is a lot prettier in the manga than the anime. But in the anime the duels are a lot more intense and I love the voice acting there!

Rajke2 года назад#34844563Thanks for the review. I agree with the quality. It is not on par with other ARTFX figures made by Kotobukiya. However the facial expression is very well captured and i still see the appeal in this figure.

Thank you for liking it! I'm also quite disappointed that older YGO ARTFX J figures are better looking than this one... Anyway, the expression is amazing indeed, that grin and those eyes! <3

solluxcaptor2 года назад#34833044So awesome! And very nice review as always :D I need to pick him up to add to my collection.
Personally the cards not being fully printed on the back doesn't really bother me, especially since that is not shown from the typical display angle, but it would be cool to see actual cards on there.

Thanks for liking the review! :)

For big Yu-Gi-Oh! fans this is still a release you shouldn't miss. I recommend you to grab him quick, because I expect his price to rise again once the re-release gets sold out at most places.

I wasn't bothered by the un-printed cards at first, but with the prices of these figures rising with each release, I found it becoming more unacceptable and now I am fed up with it, haha!

yurii2 года назад#34834474Great review! I like that they went with 'dark' Bakura for this figure and captured his face really well! Just a shame about some of the hair parts.
Man, i really need to get these yu-gi-oh figures myself, your review has reminded me of that haha! I loved the series (like ridiculously) as a kid and have been re-watching it on netflix recently. It's revived my love for it ^^;

Thanks! :) Yami Bakura seems to have a lot bigger fanbase than Ryou, so it makes sense they went this way. Although I do hope to see a Ryou (and 'normal' Yuugi!) at some point in this line too. I guess Malik was the only one with enough fans for both his versions to get two figures released so shortly after eachother, haha!

Good luck building your Yu-Gi-Oh! collection! I re-watch Yu-Gi-Oh! season 0 + DM at least every 5 years and I love it every time. <3 I recently also bought the newly printed omnibusses from Viz and want to re-read those soon too! :)
