Customising Mika figure (Part 3)

Part 1
Part 2

So a little update on the figure ^^

So over the past week I've been trying to paint him (on and off seen as I have uni and work >>) so far I've almost completed the sword and body.

Please keep in mind that the body is about the size of a nendoroids so the painting isn't perfect as I can't paint really small detail ;-;

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/AshuriiKareshi1512689485.jpeg

I started by painting the body a light grey. This was so I could paint a lighter grey over the top to try and give it a bit of depth.

I didn't really take many photos of what I did due to having to redo a lot of it but heres what I have in the end.

I still need to add the buttons down the front, correct the paint under his arm and paint the skin tones again.

I need to also add a matt spray over the top but I think most of the detail has been done (other then what I mentioned I need to do)

The paint is a little messy but it's the best I could do I'm afraid. I decided not to use masking tape (which probably would have helped >>) and just paint it all by hand. The small lines are just drawn on which a calligraphy pen.

But anyways here is the sword

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/AshuriiKareshi1512689491.jpeg

I didn't sculpt much detail on the sword so its mainly just painted on. This does mean it looks very flat but there's not much I can do about that now without having to start all over again ;-;

As for the head, I have painted the skin tone again and currently redoing the eyes before moving on to the hair. By time I complete the hair the figure will most likely be finished XD

This has just been a small update on him, thank you for reading ^^

And if anyone has any advice or tips please feel free to share, help will always be accepted ~

I've just bought paint for Mika's hair as the paint I got kinda has a green tint to it (even tho the colour lable is a very pale yellow >>) and I didn't want the hair to come off as green in anyway ;-; so I've got a light brown, yellow and quite a bit of white. I just need to mix it till it's a blonde colour

Ohhh sweet progress!!! Yay!! LOL...yeah I hate it when the paint tends to have other hues sneaking in....so annoying!!!

AshuriiKareshi (7 дней назад) #29666671XDDD I've just finished the face so all I have to paint is the hair.
Then I'll probably touch up some of the details if I can.
Also when do you think you'll get your bootleg figure? I'm really curious to how easy/diffcult they are to take apart. I kinda want to buy one but I'm terrified when I take it apart I'll break it beyond repair ;-;

Ah, the face seems like the hardest part too....so yay for having that piece done! :D

Well, so my figure is taking forever, not surprised though. It currently says: "Origin Post is Preparing Shipment" like for the past 9 days with no updates. :( Which I read online that this is not really uncommon and it may sit that way for up to two weeks, and longer in some cases. :( So who knows...I'm hoping I get it before the Christmas holidays, when I have some time off from work, so I could work on it then...but we'll see.

I will add though, that link I sent over, of someone else customizing a Shinsuke figure....they took it apart, and I don't recall them doing much other than soaking it in warm water maybe. The part I think they said they had the most trouble with was when they soaked it in acetone to remove the paint...I think it caused imperfections that they then had to go back to fill in. I don't remember them having much trouble with taking it apart though, but I do plan to go back and reread through it before I get started on mine.

:D Can't wait to see little Mika!!!

Thank you so much ;u;
And that's the whole reason why I wanted to start all this, because I thought trying to do it would be a better learning experience then just doing research (and it's a lot more fun XD). I never expected this to turn out well honestly, because I have no experience with this kind of stuff. But even tho it's not perfect it's still better then how I thought it would turn out. Which is what makes me proud of it ;-;

I've literally done what I thought would work best for me and I don't really regret that. I kind of wanted to see what I was capable of just doing it all by hand. I'm hoping more people will do blogs like this because I've always found them interesting too, which is why I'm trying it out XD

I actually had the same problem with the skin XD I painted it and it dried way too dark (Mika is quite pale) so I repainted it. But it's still too dark >> I've decided to just leave it and hope for the best now tho XD hopefully after the hairs painted he'll look better.

Thanks for the update! A soon as I saw the painted body I was like "oooh! that is totally his uniform!" I really like it!

What's most important is that you like it too! I can hardly get myself to sculpt little things, so I'm really impressed with projects like this. Maybe it didn't turn put as nice as you hoped but remember it as a learning experience. I know I learn a lot just by trying, and even though I try to read about what others have done and their methods, I just go with whatever method I think works for me when I'm creating something. Also supplies cost adds up... I often look for cheap alternatives.

I totally understand that feeling of "I wish I could fix it, but then I'd have to start over." We recently painted a figure's hair and the color dried darker than intended (derp) but it would be hell to start over. I left it half done for months and finally decided to live with it and just finish it already x'D.

AshuriiKareshi (10 дней назад) #29539853The pen I used just has Indian ink and says it's waterproof. It could bleed when I add the matt spray but I'm honestly not sure (I guess there's one way to find out XD). I also have alcohol markers which I'll try out if this fails. But so far the ink has stayed on nicely, when you paint on top of it it does mix in with the paint (making darker). But this isn't really an issue as you can just add more layers on top once that paint dries.
And thank you so much ;w; I really can't wait to see how yours turns out as well and what process's you use to make yours

Well I was curious because I ordered some pens, but wanted to see if you used the same ones and how they did. Someone actually suggested it on a paint site...they said they use it for the really fine details (these are the ones I got). They are supposedly no-bleed, permanent, and waterproof...so we'll see. Glad yours is working out well so far though, that gives me hope! :D

I now have the 'bootleg' figure I will customize ordered, the sculpting material, some clamps, the pens, and some 'tools' for molding/sculpting, etc... That should get me started once the figure gets in.... I think I'm going to do a mixed media though, making his fox tail out of fur, and adding some small tufts of fur inside his ears (really small), but sculpting the actual ears and hair. Then, was thinking of making him a shawl/throw thing to go over his yukata (out of actual material) to see if that looked better on his figure than the pvc one that comes with Shinsuke....that way I could drape it further down his shoulders. I'm just not sure I'm confident enough to sculpt one from scratch...LOL, but it should help blend the other "mixed media" in, or at least that was my thought....

Anyway....great job on Mika so far....he is going to be sooo friggin cute, I can't wait to see him all put together! Please keep the pics coming...love seeing this!!

Stacycmc (10 дней назад) #29518787Nice!!!!! Coming right along, his little outfit looks so cute!
I'm curious though, you said you used a calligraphy pen...what kind, and is it actual ink? I always heard most inks would bleed on paint or plastic so avoid using them, but I was actually researching this for when I do my Tomoe figure, as I think being able to do the finer details in his eyes would be MUCH easier with a pen than a paint brush!
Anyway, can't wait to see the whole thing...and nice job so far! Love it!
