Yamato 1/6 Rei and Asuka (Creator's Labo)Yamato 1/6 Rei and Asuka (Creator's Labo)Review

victorvipervictorviper6 лет назад
Today we'll be doing a two-for-one review of Shunya Yamashita's Rei and Asuka by Yamato. I was surprised to see there really aren't any proper reviews of these two on MFC (Rei has a couple with minimal photos from 4 years ago), so here we go. There are a few shots that could be considered moderately NSFW, so now's your chance to turn back...

About these figures: These figures are based on drawings of Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu done by famous illustrator Shunya Yamashita. Yamashita's designs definitely skew towards the voluptuous and sexy end of the spectrum, and his Rei and Asuka depict the characters in that fashion. Rei was originally released way back in December of 2007 (and a re-release followed a year or so later), and Asuka came along a bit later in November of 2010.

Now on to the review.

Packaging----------8/10 (Rei), 8.5/10 (Asuka)

Rei's box has a large window in the front, and a small version of one of Yamashita's drawings in the corner.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824910.jpeg

The sides of the box have no windows, and are surprisingly plain.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824911.jpeg

The back of the box features a large illustration of Rei.

A larger version of the box artwork.

Asuka's box has a somewhat slimmer profile.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824878.jpeg

The sides feature a sketch of Asuka and one of the sides features three tiny windows; the hex theme should be familiar to Eva fans.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824879.jpeg

Just like in Rei's case, the back of the box features a large image of Asuka.

A larger version of the artwork.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824881.jpeg

There's relatively little window area on either box, so those who keep their figures in the box might deduct another point or so. However, the large, distinctive illustrations of Rei and Asuka make these boxes ideal candidates for display. I've got them filling some empty space on the bottom shelf of a Detolf. The artwork is definitely eye-catching.

Posing----------8/10 (Rei), 8.5/10 (Asuka)

I had a hard time assigning scores here. The poses are not super-dynamic (although Asuka's pose is a little bit less static than Rei's), but the overall look of these figures really makes them stand out on the shelf. Let's start by taking a good look at Rei.

Sculpting----------7.5/10 (Rei), 9/10 (Asuka)
Painting-----------7.5/10 (Rei), 9/10 (Asuka)

Rei is an older figure, predating Asuka by three years, and thus it is possible to spot some differences in quality between these two figures. We'll see that Rei has a few defects both in sculpt and painting. Asuka's overall finish is much better; in her case, however, there is one major issue not so much with the quality of the sculpt, but with her design. More on that in a bit.
Let's start with Rei. As you can see, her outfit is a mini-dress which is obviously inspired by the design of her plugsuit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824921.jpeg

A closeup of Rei's face. All her key features translate into this figure, including her red eyes. My only complaint is that sometimes it seems to me as if her face isn't all that Rei-like. Granted, this is not the Rei of the anime, who usually is not particularly expressive, and this rendering of her gives off a very sultry vibe so that could be it. On the other hand, we'll see in a moment the corresponding Asuka does a somewhat better job capturing her overall demeanor.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824922.jpeg

Here, you can easily see some painting flaws. The area around her collar is definitely a bit messy, and there are some obvious rough spots finish-wise on the straps around her arms. Also, you can see where some black paint on her right arm bleeds into the white finish. It's about par for the course for a 2007 figure, but flaws are flaws. On the positive side, her outfit has a pearlescent finish that looks nice.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824923.jpeg

The seam attaching the front of her hair is fairly conspicuous. Her hairstyle differs somewhat from that of Rei from the anime; it's a little more of a bobcut. I do like the way her hair sort of curls around her face, but I think maybe her hair should be just a little darker blue. That's probably just a matter of personal preference, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824924.jpeg

The painting on the palms of her gloves is a little bit sloppy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824925.jpeg

I like the definition on her underarm. Armpit aficionados rejoice.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824926.jpeg

As noted earlier, Rei's outfit is a (very short!) mini-dress whose design is inspired by her plugsuit. I like the various straps and fasteners that are an obvious nod to the plugsuit's design, and once again, the pearlescent effect is quite noticeable here. You can see a couple spots of sloppy painting, particularly where the white paint of her dress spills over onto some of the silver parts.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824927.jpeg

Her boots remind me of 1960's style go-go boots. In addition, there is a most definite zettai ryouiki effect!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824928.jpeg

Here, you can see a little bit of a seam line running down her leg.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824929.jpeg

Another seam on her other leg.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824931.jpeg

Maybe this offsets those seamlines on her legs. Shunya Yamashita at his finest.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824930.jpeg

Overall, Rei's finish is not bad, particularly considering this figure was made 6 years ago. The good news is that Asuka's overall finish is significantly better. So without further adieu, let's see some of her highlights!

I think that Asuka's design is much more in keeping with the character. Some of her fiery disposition definitely comes through here.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824891.jpeg

A closeup of Asuka. If Asuka was a real flesh and blood human being, I think she might actually look a lot like this.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824892.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824893.jpeg

Like Rei, the seam attaching her bangs is pretty conspicuous, although she has a lot more hair so it looks a little less unnatural. Overall, her hair is nicely sculpted; there are no rough spots or any signs of excess material.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824894.jpeg

It looks like Asuka might be tossing her hair. In my estimation, this makes her look much less static than Rei. Her hairclips/neurotransmitters are of course one of her key features.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824895.jpeg

Asuka's outfit is also highly inspired by her plugsuit. I like the way her outfit is sculpted, particularly around her midsection.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824896.jpeg

Her boots have Asuka's signature "double stripe" design-a nice touch!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824897.jpeg

The "2" on the backpack is another nice nod to the origin of the character.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824898.jpeg

Like Rei, the painting on her gloves is just a little bit sloppy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824899.jpeg

Now, for the most contentious aspect of the design of this figure. Yamashita's characters are not waifish; they generally have a little substance to them...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824900.jpeg

...but from this angle, her backside looks rather flat and non-shapely. Now, her outfit is extremely high-cut, so that's possibly a contributing factor. However, we'll see in a moment there's something else going on as well.

From this angle, though, the effect is not so pronounced.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824901.jpeg

From this angle, I think her figure shows off quite well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824902.jpeg

If you read her item page on MFC, there have been some complaints about the way her backside is rendered, and I can understand why. However, I think there's only one angle (viewing her from directly behind) where she looks really awkward; how much this bothers you will obviously be a matter of personal taste and how you choose to display her.

The image below features, in my estimation, the biggest flaw in her design.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824903.jpeg

Note how her waist is quite narrow. Asuka is sufficiently slim that her hipbones are evident, but then her thighs are quite large, probably a bit too large. Considering that her waist is small, and her bust is not overly large, it sure seems to me as if her thighs are slightly out of proportion to the rest of her body. Is it a big deal that ruins the figure? No, not hardly, but it's just one of those things which is hard to un-notice.

Base----------7/10 (Rei), 7/10 (Asuka)

Considering Rei and Asuka are 1/6 scale, their bases are surprisingly small. Rei's base measures barely 3.5 inches (9 cm) in diameter, and Asuka's base is just slightly larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824905.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824904.jpeg

I do like the fact that the bases feature each character's signature color. However, I would have preferred a bit more uniformity in their design and I could maybe do without the names written in cursive script, although that might be picky. It is worth noting that Asuka, despite standing on one leg, is not screwed into her base. Now, I've seen no signs of leaning in my Asuka, but it's something of which to be aware, particularly if you're thinking about picking her up preowned.

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------8.5/10 (Rei), 9/10 (Asuka)

Rei is decidedly imperfect in terms of her finish. Asuka is excellent in that regard, although that issue with her backside could be a major turnoff for some potential buyers. However, the overall look of these two figures is so unique that I'd highly recommend them both. It's not easy to take anime characters and give them a "realistic" facelift, but in this respect, I think these two figures are a big success. Now, I've seen comments that have suggested these figures should be viewed as strippers cosplaying as Rei and Asuka, and such a comment is not entirely without merit, but I was very glad to add them both to my collection nonetheless.

Now, If you're only going to own only one Rei/Asuka pair, I might not necessarily recommend this pair as the one. On their own, they certainly evoke thoughts of these two iconic characters, but at the same time I don't really view them as the "real" Rei and Asuka if that makes any sense. However, if you have multiple Reis and Asukas in your collection, these two figures will complement them very nicely.

Let's finish the review with a few shots of Rei and Asuka together.

A little fan service...

Two radically different visions of Rei and Asuka.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2013/09/27/824909.jpeg

Availability (as of this writing):

Sold out new, not too difficult to find preowned.

Both of them seem to show up fairly routinely through the usual secondhand channels. Considering I got Rei a little over a year ago for 6500 yen, it seems like Rei had been going for around 6000-8000 yen for a long time. However, I just checked Mandarake and the only one I could find was her re-release, listed at a whopping 16000 yen! Asuka's price also seems to fluctuate pretty wildly. Looking at her page on MFC reveals that on Mandarake, she's been priced anywhere from 5000 to 11000 yen during the last year or so. Thus, if you decide to make them yours, the price you'll end up paying might be something of a dice roll. And, let's be honest, given how radically different these figures are from the myriad other Reis and Asukas out there, you really won't be able to have one without the other. Figure synergy, if you will.

victorviper8 месяцев назад#71152975It took some searching, but looking at this photo PICTURE #1915674 makes it seem like the two Reis would look good together, particularly if you are a fan of her character.

Nice!!

Thanks for that leg work!

Happyakrz8 месяцев назад#71152932Thanks for this great review! I’ve actually been wondering about buying these two to go with the newer Rei that I recently reviewed.
Do you feel that the three would work well together?
I’m sure that I’ll probably have to pay a pretty penny for this pair, but I really like the realistic sculpts of both.

victorviper6 лет назад#1755052I've seen the sloppy paint on her arm in a few other photos. And, it's not that bad; I'd never noticed in fact until I took the photos.
They are nice figures, though. It must be so very easy to just do paint-by-the-numbers figures of Rei and Asuka, so I have to give some credit for this fairly radical take on the two of them.
That reminds me: after reading your review of Hakufu a few weeks ago, the corresponding Ryoumou showed up on AmiAmi, so I had get her. She arrived that other day, and she looks really nice!

Jep, I also love the style. I'm not really into NGE myself, but these 2 are amazing!

And nice to hear! Are you also planning a review of that Ryoumou? ^^

TrashCat6 лет назад#1756314You can easily tell both versions appart, the 1st Version (the bad one) has a white box, the 2nd Version (amazing one) has a black one. Of course be prepared to pay more for the black one. However, I'd say it's so absolutely worth it.
So yeah, if you wonder why you've never seen Rei's flaws on user pics ... it's because these users own the second version and there are no flaws. XD

Thanks for adding this useful information :). There's surprisingly few comments on Rei's MFC page, and I'd heard some isolated murmuring about Rei by reading other sites, but I had no idea there was such a big difference between the first and second editions. Plus, I'd bought Asuka first (and she's generally fine quality-wise), so I was a little surprised to see those flaws in Rei.

In any event, thanks for reading and adding this point. It'll hopefully be helpful to someone else some day who's considering buying Rei...

Nice review of two very beautiful figures. :) I'd like to point out that it is possible to get that Rei without those flaws. The First version (#015) has loads of flaws, both in painting and sculpting, fans were very disappointed in Yamato coz of that. So Yamato re-released her to make up for the bad quality of the first version. The second (#025) isn't only nearly flawless, it's also so much more awesome coz it includes an extra head with bandages. You can easily tell both versions appart, the 1st Version (the bad one) has a white box, the 2nd Version (amazing one) has a black one. Of course be prepared to pay more for the black one. jkb6 лет назад#1755248I really enjoy those "mature" faces, a friend of mine once said "they don't even look like the original drawing !" and I said "they are awesome !". I only find 3 figures of this kind after hours of search, 3rd one : Max Factory's Yoko Real Image ver.
Nice review ! Good job !

I was actually trying to think of some other figures that are done in a similar style. I had forgotten about that Yoko, but it seems to me that some of the Ikki Tousen characters have gotten a similar treatment.

Regarding your other comment, I wouldn't have minded if Asuka was maybe a little more like her illustration, but I think Rei looks better than the illustration.
